Ligue 1: Fonseca says a Sporting move is a possibility

No denial from Lyon’s coach

Paulo Fonseca did not confirm that he is leaving Lyon. He did not rule it out either. Speaking after Sunday’s 2-0 win over Angers, the 53-year-old called a move to Sporting a possibility, according to RMC Sport, and said he would be with his squad on Monday.

Asked directly whether the Lisbon club wanted him, he kept it vague. “Everything is possible,” he told Ligue 1+, adding that he enjoys working in France. In his press conference he repeated the same line with a smile and said the coming days would bring clarity.

The reports link him with the job held by Rui Borges, who is under pressure at Sporting. CNN Portugal had said Fonseca was already in advanced talks. Nothing has been made official by either club.

A busy week before the break

Fonseca arrived at Lyon in January 2025. His side moved up to third in Ligue 1 on Sunday and ended a run of two defeats without a goal, with Ernest Nuamah and Corentin Tolisso scoring. The coach was in tears among his players after Tolisso’s late second, and he explained that the embrace from his captain moved him.

The calendar now matters. Lyon visit Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday at 6:45 pm French time, then travel to Brest in Ligue 1 on Sunday at 5:15 pm. After that comes the international break, which would be a natural point for any change on the bench.

Until Lyon say otherwise, Fonseca remains in charge for both games.
