The 0-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund was settled in the first half, with both goals arriving before the break. After that, the comeback never really came.
To concede twice inside 45 minutes and then shut the door afterwards does at least show a team that can reset. The problem is they did it too late.
Losing to Germany’s runners-up is not a disgrace in itself. The real issue is the lack of anything going forward.
The injury list is not helping the coaching staff either. Omari and Dickes are both out with shoulder injuries, while Rössing-Lelesiit is still working his way back.
Those absences hit defensive options and make rotation harder this early in the season. The room for manoeuvre is already thin.
The expected line-up has Daniel Heuer Fernandes in goal, a back three, and a Fabio Vieira-Grönbaek pairing supporting Patson Daka.
That three-man defence is designed to protect the middle while freeing up the flanks. It asks plenty of El Ouahdi and Lemke out wide.
Getting back to the Volksparkstadion and the home crowd remains Hamburg’s best card to play. A first point would be a decent start.
The immediate target is simple: get off the mark against Mainz before the table starts to harden. A second straight defeat would make this start to the season look ugly fast.

Keeping a clean sheet in the first game is a decent platform for the rest of the season. Mainz are currently 10th.
The downside is obvious: the attack was quiet too. The Nullfünfer need more bite in the penalty area.
A goalless draw usually tells you two things at once: the structure is there, but the attacking output is lacking. That balance has to shift in Hamburg.
Robin Zentner remains the anchor in goal, protected by a back line that should include Potulski and da Costa.
The third centre-back spot is still up for grabs between Gruber and Posch, based on the expected line-ups. The staff have a genuine decision to make there.
Up front, the Nadiem Amiri-Jae-sung Lee duo links play with Becker and Tietz, who are expected to lead the line.
Amiri is Mainz’s main creator and the one to watch between the lines. Most of their best moments should run through him.
A trip to a side still without a point gives Mainz a real chance to pull clear of the danger zone. They have every chance of taking at least a draw.
A win would move Mainz to four points and into the top half of the table. That feels well within reach given the opposition.
