Griekspoor rips up the seedings
Some nights just belong to a player. This one was Tallon Griekspoor’s. Short of form for weeks, the Dutchman sent top seed Alexander Zverev packing in the second round of the Montreal Masters 1000, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-4.
Zverev looked in charge early, nicking the first-set tiebreak. Then the match turned. Griekspoor raised his level, broke up the German’s rhythm and took the next two sets without ever really letting go.
For Zverev, it stings. Seeded first in Canada, he had a deep run in mind on this North American swing. Out in the second round instead.

A dent before New York
Montreal is one of the last big tune-ups before the US Open, the year’s final Grand Slam, in New York from late August. Bowing out now costs Zverev exactly what he wants most right now, hard-court matches to build on.
Griekspoor gets the opposite. A win over one of the game’s elite is the kind of result that can light a fuse, if he keeps riding it.
The rest of the draw
His half of the bracket just cracked wide open. Zverev leaves with less time and a bigger question, how fast he can reset before New York.
