A positional record broken by a whisker
Three million dollars. That is all that separates Christian Gonzalez from the man who held the cornerback record for barely three weeks. The talks had dragged on for months before finally getting done overnight, and according to multiple U.S. outlets the New England Patriots have agreed a four-year, $135 million extension with their young corner, $102 million of it guaranteed. At 24, he is now the best-paid player at his position in the league.
Devon Witherspoon set the previous mark in Seattle in mid-August: four years, $132 million, $101 million guaranteed. Gonzalez clears it by three million overall and one million in guarantees. That tells you something about how the cornerback market has settled this summer. Each new deal nudges the last one aside instead of blowing it apart.

Two days before kickoff, and not by chance
The agreement lands 48 hours before the Patriots open the season in Seattle. That game doubles as a rematch of the Super Bowl New England lost. So Week 1 hands us the two highest-paid cornerbacks in American football on the same field, in the same stadium where one of them signed his own record deal a few weeks earlier.
Gonzalez had missed two weeks of training camp in August with a leg injury. He has been back at full speed for the past 15 days, which clearly settled whatever doubts were left inside football operations.
Four games as a rookie, then a climb
Selected in the first round of the 2023 draft out of Oregon, Gonzalez played four games before a right shoulder injury shut his rookie year down. Everything since has backed up New England’s bet. He started all 16 games he played in 2024, picking off two passes, breaking up 11, recovering a fumble and making 59 tackles.
Last season brought 10 passes defended and 69 tackles across 14 starts. His playoff run was the real sales pitch at the negotiating table: an interception, a sack, a forced fumble, seven passes defended and 19 tackles in four games, right up to the Super Bowl loss. Franchises pay top dollar for a 24-year-old who plays his best football when the stakes climb.
