Titans vs Knights: Newcastle arrive with momentum to kick off Super Sunday
Magic Round rolls on at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday, with a first-up clash that already has a bit of bite about it between the Titans and the Knights.
On paper, Newcastle turn up with far more certainty. The Knights have strung together a run of eye-catching attacking displays and finally look like they are finding their groove after an erratic start to the season.
The Titans, meanwhile, still have that odd habit of looking dangerous for a few sets, then falling apart as soon as the heat goes up.
In other words: this one has the makings of a lively afternoon.
The Titans are still leaking defensively
Once again, Gold Coast showed both sides of themselves last week.
For much of the first half against the Roosters, the Titans hung in there. They were still in the contest at the break, just four points down, and had put together a few promising attacking spells.
Then it all fell apart.
As so often this season, the Titans lost control the moment the tempo stepped up.
The issue is no longer really their attack.
With the ball, this side can create chances. Keano Kini brings plenty of pace out wide, the youngsters are growing in confidence and there are still some neat passages in there.
The real problem is elsewhere: this defence just does not hold.
Another 37 missed tackles last week, a heap of post-contact metres conceded and a chronic inability to slow down the opposition’s yardage.
And what will worry them most is that these mistakes look more like an intensity and effort issue than a simple tactical one.
When a side starts fading physically that quickly in second halves, it becomes brutally hard to fix in the middle of a season.
Newcastle are clearly building
While the Titans are still searching for answers, Newcastle look to have found a formula.
That convincing win over the Dragons backed up a trend that has been there for a few weeks now: this team is getting more dangerous in attack by the game.
The Knights scored nine tries without ever easing off.
What stands out most is how smooth they look right now.
Kalyn Ponga has completely changed the side since coming back. His impact in broken play and his ability to create space have transformed Newcastle’s attack.
Around him, Fletcher Sharpe just keeps rising.
The young playmaker looks more and more confident and his link-up with Dylan Brown is starting to click properly. The two complement each other nicely: one brings pace and unpredictability, the other brings control and structure.
The biggest improvement, though, may be the collective discipline.
Newcastle now play with far more control. They are finishing sets better, winning more of the field position battle and, crucially, defending with an edge that was missing early in the year.
Keeping the Dragons out for the full game is a huge positive sign.
This side is starting to look like a genuine threat for the second half of the season.
A game that could get away from everyone
All signs point to this being an open contest.
The Titans give up points in bundles but can still produce a few dangerous attacking bursts. Newcastle, for their part, have played with total confidence over the past two weeks and look keen to crank up the pace from the opening whistle.
The Magic Round setting only adds to that feeling.
Fast surface, big crowd, two teams that like to play on the move: it is hard to see this one turning into a grind on Sunday afternoon.
Kalyn Ponga also has plenty on the line individually.
With State of Origin selection getting closer, the Knights fullback knows another big display could all but lock in his spot for Queensland.
And against a defence as fragile as the Titans’, the gaps should be there.
Try it for $0.99.
NRL prediction Titans vs Knights
Over 51.5 points
This has all the signs of an attacking shootout. Newcastle come in full of confidence with 86 points scored across their last two games, while the Titans keep folding defensively whenever the intensity rises.
With both sides able to play at pace and plenty of strike power out wide, this line looks well within reach.

First, a word on our predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. It is an opinion, a read on the current state of play, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal from nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks obvious, it is never that simple. And yes, that means you can lose. At some point, that is inevitable.
- The smart move is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live. And above all, do not chase losses. That rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If you feel it is taking up too much space in your day, making you angry or putting you under pressure, take a break. And if you need to, speak to a specialist service. That is what it is there for.
- In the end, responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is illegal for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Gambling can spiral quickly (money lost, family tension, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They carry no legal force. In plain English: you cannot use them to claim anything back if a bet loses.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know when it is written. But things move on: a team sheet changes (the Titans’ one, for example), a player gets hurt, the weather turns, and the analysis can be out of date in no time. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your responsibility
Before betting, make sure wagering is legal where you are. If it is not, that is on you, not us.
Responsible gambling first
