Three weeks from Trieste to Milan
The 2027 Giro d’Italia was presented in Rome on Tuesday. The race starts in Trieste on 8 May and finishes on 30 May, and the organisers have built the final week around two of Italy’s most feared climbs.
The Gavia is the roof of the race at 2,618 metres. It arrives on stage 16, on 25 May, with 16.5 kilometres at an average gradient of 8 per cent and a day that totals roughly 5,700 metres of climbing.

The Zoncolan decides it
The Monte Zoncolan comes the day before the finish. It is 10.1 kilometres at 11.9 per cent, steep enough that the overall classification could be settled there rather than on the closing parade into Milan.
The rest of the route is balanced between the sprinters, the climbers and the time triallists. There are six sprint stages, eight hilly stages and five high-mountain stages. Two time trials split the race: a first one of 19.6 kilometres that is mostly uphill, and a second of 37.3 kilometres, flatter, between Monza and Milan.
The women’s Giro runs from 29 May to 6 June over nine stages. It includes an 11-kilometre uphill time trial on the eve of the finish and a Mont Blanc stage with 4,000 metres of climbing in 132 kilometres.
Which leaders will line up in Trieste is still an open question, and the start list is the next thing to watch.
