NFL: Giants’ Brian Burns Tears ACL

A Choice That Cost Him The Season

Brian Burns had a low ankle sprain going into Sunday. He played anyway. Twelve-seven, Giants over the Titans, and somewhere in that grind he planted wrong and tore his ACL. Adam Schefter broke the news Sunday night: New York’s best pass rusher is done for 2026.

Burns never left the field before the injury. He had been considered questionable through the week, the ankle held up through warmups and kickoff, and it held right up until his knee didn’t. Surgery is expected in the coming weeks, with a recovery timeline that will likely stretch into next offseason.

Three Years, One Constant

Since the Giants acquired him from Carolina in a 2024 trade, Burns started every single game for New York. That streak ends now, and so does a career-high campaign: 16.5 sacks last season, the best number of his career, on a five-year, 141 million dollar deal that still runs through 2028.

New York’s pass rush leaned on him more than any name on the depth chart. He set the edge, closed on quarterbacks, and did it snap after snap without missing a Sunday since arriving in East Rutherford. That is what makes the loss sting. It is not just the sacks. It is the snap count and the attention he drew from opposing tackles that now has to come from somewhere else.

What Comes Next For New York

The Giants improve to 2-1 with the win over Tennessee, the defense doing enough while the offense managed only twelve points. Now they have to find pressure for the remaining fourteen games, in a division that includes the Cowboys and Eagles, without the player they built their pass rush around.

The front office will have to decide whether to chase help on the trade market or lean on a rotation that suddenly looks thinner than it did Saturday night. Either way, Sunday’s win over Tennessee came at a real cost, and it will follow this defense for months.
