Division Clinched in West Sacramento
Houston needed one more number to fall its way, and it did. The Astros blanked the Athletics 9-0 on Sunday, and the real celebration started when word arrived from Minneapolis: the Texas Rangers had lost 6-4 to the Twins. That result handed Houston the AL West title outright, its eighth division crown in the last ten seasons.
The Astros did the damage early. Rookie Lucas Spence ripped a two-run triple as part of a four-run third inning that put the game away before the Coliseum crowd had settled into their seats. Christian Walker added a solo homer in the sixth. Yainer Diaz, Cam Smith and Jeremy Pena each chipped in two hits and an RBI, spreading the work across the lineup rather than leaning on one bat.

A Finale That Had to Go Right
Houston walked into Sunday still tied with Texas after Saturday’s 13-2 rout of the same Athletics, a game where Pena went 4-for-6 with two homers and Alvarez added a three-run shot of his own. The tiebreaker sat in Houston’s favor, but only a win would settle things outright, and the Astros made sure it never came down to that math.
Yordan Alvarez went 1-for-4 with an RBI single on Sunday, enough to push his average to .316 and secure his first career batting title. It’s a quieter storyline than the division clinch, but for a player who missed chunks of the season to injury, finishing on top of the league’s hitters says plenty about where his swing is right now heading into October.
Oakland Closes the Book, Houston Opens a New Chapter
Oakland had little to offer in reply. Lawrence Butler collected two of the Athletics’ five hits, and that was close to the extent of the resistance. The loss was Oakland’s ninth in its last twelve games, a rough way to close a season that ends 64-98 and last in the division.
Houston’s final line reads 81-81, a reminder of how tight and, at times, how ordinary the AL West race was this year. Division titles don’t come with an asterisk, though. The Astros will host the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday to open a best-of-three wild-card series as the American League’s third seed, and they went 5-2 against Chicago in the regular season, a small edge they’ll try to carry into October.
