Genoa vs Sudtirol: one point from four league games meets a flying Serie B side 
One point from four Serie A games for Genoa, eight from a possible 12 in Serie B for Sudtirol. Those numbers tell the story of both teams’ form.
Kick-off is set for Tuesday 15 September at 18:00 CEST at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium. Knockout football does not forgive anyone who turns up with the wrong mindset.
There is no extra time at this stage of the competition. If the game is level after 90 minutes, it goes straight to penalties, which removes some of the theoretical edge held by the Serie A side.
The reward was laid out in the draw. The winner will face Inter Milan in the next round, which gives this tie extra bite for a second-tier club.
Genoa come in with the pressure on. Daniele De Rossi is still waiting for his first win of the season, and an exit at this stage would put his job under immediate scrutiny.
Sudtirol have nothing to lose and plenty to build on. Four straight seasons in Serie B after coming up from Serie C, and a stadium of around 5,000 seats: the Tyrol club are punching well above their weight.
Genoa’s record in this competition also feeds the doubt. They have only won it once, back in 1937, and have gone out in the round of 16 nine times in the last 11 editions.
The most recent exit is still fresh. Atalanta brushed them aside 4-0 last season, with Genoa barely laying a glove on them.
Both teams made it through the first round, but in very different ways. Genoa cruised past Ascoli, while Sudtirol had to win on penalties away from home.
That contrast, between a favourite that is wobbling and an outsider full of belief, makes this one easy enough to read.

Seven goals conceded in Genoa’s first three Serie A matches: the defensive numbers tell you everything about a messy start. Their first point only arrived on Saturday, at home to newly promoted Frosinone.
The 1-1 draw summed up the mood around the club. Johan Vasquez equalised in the 50th minute before being sent off near the end.
The most worrying stat was not on the scoreboard. Frosinone, up from Serie B, fired 26 shots at the Ferraris, which raises serious questions about the structure De Rossi has put in place.
Even so, Genoa should rotate on Tuesday. The fixture sits between two home games against direct relegation rivals, Frosinone and Parma.
That explains the club’s thinking. Staying up is the priority, and everything revolves around that, so the staff are likely to protect legs before Parma arrive.
The first round had at least offered some relief. Genoa beat Ascoli 4-1 at the Ferraris, scoring twice in each half.
Lorenzo Colombo could be rested after missing a penalty on Saturday. Cody Drameh and Hamed Traore, signed in the summer 2026 window, could both get their first starts.
The injury list is short. Elias Havel and Lorenzo Venturino are the only confirmed absentees, which still leaves De Rossi enough to field a competitive side.

Sudtirol: Possanzini’s method and belief running high 
Eight points from 12 in Serie B since the restart and Sudtirol were straight into the top end of the table. They just missed out on first place last weekend.
The setting tells you plenty about the gap between the clubs. Sudtirol’s ground holds about 5,000 fans, while the Ferraris takes many times that.
But that lack of size has never held the club back. Four straight seasons in the second tier after promotion from Serie C, with no step backwards.
The 1-1 draw at home to Modena left a bitter taste. Alvin Okoro had put them ahead in the first half, only for the equaliser to arrive in the 88th minute.
There is a clear identity to the way they play. Davide Possanzini, appointed this summer, spent seven years working under Roberto De Zerbi and has brought a bold possession game with him.
Their cup run already reflects that character. Sudtirol beat Catanzaro away from home in the first round on penalties.
Kenny Mixtur was the man of the night. The Guadeloupe international scored the late goal that forced the shootout and will now be pushing for a place in the starting XI.
The attack is built around loans from Serie A. Okoro and Rares Burnete are competing for the central role, while Kevin Zeroli, loaned from AC Milan in early September 2026, is set to anchor midfield. Hamza El Kaouakibi is the only confirmed absentee.

Genoa have shipped seven goals in three league games and have just let a Serie B side come to the Ferraris and rack up 26 attempts. Nothing in recent form suggests they are suddenly going to lock things down against a side that scores regularly.
Sudtirol have been finding the net in their recent matches, in both cup and league, with Okoro and Mixtur among the scorers. Genoa, even with changes, still have El Shaarawy and Vitinha to hurt teams at home.
The knockout setting should also open things up. Both teams to score at the Ferraris.
