That ability to win in two different ways is the real takeaway from the first 180 minutes. First a comfortable win, then a controlled one, with the same discipline at the back.
Eggestein’s goal was enough against a Paderborn side that still haven’t scored in Bundesliga action. Freiburg shut the game down and never looked in trouble.
Conceding just one goal in two games puts Freiburg among the league’s top three defences, alongside Augsburg and Mainz. That sort of base matters against an opponent struggling for cutting edge.
Their consistency stands out against the shakier starts of several bigger names in the division. Freiburg are ahead of Dortmund on goal difference and sitting on the shoulder of leaders Augsburg.
The edge here is obvious enough when you look at the context and the numbers. Freiburg are at home, unbeaten, and facing the second-worst defence in the league.

Gladbach have taken nothing from their first two games, with three goals scored and seven conceded. They are 17th, with only Hamburg below them.
Their opening match ended in a defeat at Leipzig, with no goal to show for it. Even so, the trip to the Red Bull Arena was supposed to be a measured first test for the season.
The second round was even more worrying. Beaten 3-4 at Borussia-Park by Elversberg, who were playing just their second top-flight match, Gladbach shipped four goals at home.
Elversberg had trailed before turning the game around and making it two wins from two in their first Bundesliga campaign. The contrast with Gladbach says plenty about the Rhine club’s start.
The oddity of this one is worth spelling out: Gladbach scored three times and still lost. The attack finally woke up, but the back line never got the memo.
Seven goals conceded in two outings is the second-worst total in the league, behind Hamburg. No other side near the top or middle of the table comes close to that kind of mess.
So the key issue for this trip to the Breisgau is defensive. Ship that many goals in two games and every lapse gets punished fast.
The Foals are also coming in off two straight defeats, a start they have not had for several seasons. The margin for error is already shrinking fast.
