One thing is certain: an American will be in Sunday’s US Open final. Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton meet in the last four after both pulled off wild quarter-final wins in front of the New York crowd.
If Tiafoe somehow came back from two sets down against Alex Michelsen, Shelton lit up Arthur Ashe Stadium in the dead of night by knocking out defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.
With Tiafoe riding the moment and Shelton full of belief, this one should be electric with a final spot on the line.
Tiafoe survives the scare 
Frances Tiafoe came perilously close to the edge. Two sets down and then broken early in the deciding set, the 28-year-old looked to be staring straight into the abyss against his young countryman Alex Michelsen.
The No. 11 seed is used to matches that go completely off the rails, and US Open 2026 has been no exception. If anything, it has been business as usual.
As so often at Flushing Meadows, Tiafoe feeds off the noise on the big courts. He dug deep, turned the match on its head and got it done in the fifth-set super tiebreak.
Already a finalist in Cincinnati before arriving in New York, the fan favourite is now just one step away from a first Grand Slam final.

Shelton knocks out the champion
Ben Shelton, meanwhile, produced the biggest win of his young career in a night-time marathon that lasted just over four hours and ended with an ace.
Against a Carlos Alcaraz who has not looked fully fit this fortnight after returning from injury, Shelton kept hammering away with huge forehands and a barrage of aces until the former world No. 1 finally cracked in the fifth-set super tiebreak.
Up against Alcaraz, the American brought the lot to break down the defending champion and end his Grand Slam winning streak. Rock solid on serve and fearless at the big moments, he handled the finish superbly.
Already a semifinalist here in 2023, the 23-year-old left-hander has kept building momentum this summer and comes into this clash looking every bit a real title contender.
Shelton holds the edge in the head-to-head
The pair know each other inside out and are used to producing proper battles out there. Shelton leads their overall head-to-head on tour 3-1, although their Grand Slam record is level at one win apiece in New York.
Shelton won in four sets in 2023, while Tiafoe got his revenge the following year in a five-set thriller.
