France: Lloris comeback talk is making noise, but Deschamps has already made his call

Just over a month out from the 2026 World Cup, Hugo Lloris has somehow found his way back into the conversation around France. The former captain, who retired from international football in January 2023, has not completely shut the door on a return. That was enough to set tongues wagging over the past 24 hours. It had all the makings of the sort of left-field, almost storybook twist football loves to sell. In reality, though, Didier Deschamps and his staff are not planning to reopen that file at this stage.

Lloris is not pushing it, but he would not say no

What put the story back on the map was the suggestion that Hugo Lloris, now 39, would be open to a World Cup return, even if it meant coming in as third-choice keeper. This is not some one-man campaign or an attempt to rock the current pecking order. Far from it. People close to him say he would not try to force anything. But if Deschamps were to call, he would not turn it down.

Naturally, that was enough to light the fuse. Lloris is never just another name in France colours. He is on 145 caps, a World Cup winner, a former skipper, and still hard to dismiss on footballing grounds after a strong season with Los Angeles FC. So, on paper, the idea is not absurd. But international football is not run on nostalgia alone.

In Deschamps’ mind, it is not really a subject

And that is where the picture becomes clearer. Multiple reports point the same way: Lloris may be open to the idea, but the France staff have no intention of bringing him back. The message from the camp is plain enough: it is not on the agenda right now. In other words, the noise is real, but from Deschamps’ side this does not look like an active file at all.

That means one simple thing. The coach does not want to reopen a door he believes was shut in 2023. Not even with a last tournament in sight. Not even with Lloris’ huge experience. Not even for a back-up role.

The current pecking order is the working model

In goal, the picture is already pretty settled. Mike Maignan is still the expected No 1 for the World Cup. Behind him, Brice Samba is in pole position to be the deputy, while Lucas Chevalier, despite limited minutes at PSG, remains in the staff’s thinking after being called up in March. Bringing Lloris back, however tempting it sounds on an emotional level, would disrupt that continuity just weeks before a major tournament. And that, clearly, is not a road Deschamps wants to go down.

Benzema or Kante before does not change much

Some will point to Deschamps’ habit of springing surprises in the past. Fair enough. The returns of Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante showed that nothing is ever totally fixed with him. But those cases answered very specific needs in very particular circumstances. This is different. It is not about restoring a player who is still central to the project. It is about bringing back an international legend, now retired from that stage, to provide cover. And plainly, that is not the direction being taken.

The story only has legs because Lloris still carries real weight

At the end of the day, this keeps rumbling on because Hugo Lloris is still Hugo Lloris. His name still hits a nerve in French football. But right now, this feels more like media fantasy than a genuine federation plan. Lloris would not say no. Deschamps is not planning to say yes. And for the moment, that second part is the one that matters.
