Rafael Jodar is no longer just Madrid’s feel-good story. He’s becoming a real talking point on the tour. After beating Alex de Minaur and then Joao Fonseca, the 19-year-old Spaniard has reached the last 16 of the Madrid Masters 1000, where he now faces Vit Kopriva. His run has already caught the eye of Daniil Medvedev, who did not hide his admiration for such a rapid climb.

Medvedev sees far more than a flash in the pan
The Russian said he had watched part of the match and was struck by what Jodar is doing at his age. What stands out most for Medvedev is the speed of the rise. Seeing a player who was still miles down the rankings a year ago break into the Top 40 so quickly is rare. And when that comes from a former world No 1, it carries extra weight.
The real question is already out there: how far can he go?
That is where Medvedev’s comments get interesting. He did not just say Jodar is playing well. He asked the question everyone ends up asking when a youngster bursts through like this: are we looking at a future Grand Slam winner, or just a very good player? It is a huge difference. Medvedev knows it better than most. On the tour, plenty of young players rise fast. Very few stay near the top.
Madrid is proving Jodar is no longer operating in the shadows
What makes this feel even bigger is the stage he is doing it on. Madrid is not some small event where people get carried away for no reason. It is a Masters 1000, with demanding conditions, established opponents and the added pressure that comes with being a home player. Jodar has not just shown up. He has already knocked out De Minaur and Fonseca, two serious names, to book his place in the last 16. At this point, it is no longer just a quirk of the draw.
A rise that is already scrambling the usual markers
His leap up the rankings explains the reaction too. Only last year, Jodar was still operating a long way outside the elite bracket. Now he has forced his way to the edge of the top tier, already in the Top 40 according to several live tournament trackers. For a 19-year-old, that is a serious pace of progress. And it gives Medvedev’s remarks even more bite, because this does not look like one hot week and little else.
Kopriva now stands between him and even more hype
Before anyone gets carried away, Jodar still has a very real hurdle in front of him: Vit Kopriva. The last-16 clash is another major test, because it could send him into the quarter-finals of a home Masters 1000. And the further he goes, the more people will pay attention. He is no longer just being talked about as a promising young Spanish talent. He is starting to look like a player the big names are watching properly.
What stands out most is how quickly the conversation has changed
Not long ago, the debate around Jodar was whether he could establish himself on tour. Now a champion like Medvedev is already wondering about his ceiling. That does not guarantee anything, of course. Tennis is full of runs that catch fire before cooling off just as fast. But one thing is clear: when a former world No 1 starts talking about a 19-year-old like this, that player has already moved beyond being just another prospect.
