Feyenoord vs Go Ahead Eagles: runners-up face the weekend’s top scorers 
Stadion Feijenoord hosts Sunday’s 14:30 Eredivisie clash between Feyenoord and Go Ahead Eagles. The game will be shown on ESPN 1 in the Netherlands.
Both clubs opened with wins, but they went about it in very different ways. Feyenoord edged the Rotterdam derby 1-0 against Sparta, while Go Ahead Eagles smashed Willem II 4-1 at home.
That four-goal haul was the biggest on the opening weekend, putting the Eagles second in the early table. Not bad for a side heading to Rotterdam with real belief.
The history, though, is brutal. Feyenoord have won nine of the last 10 meetings between the sides from Deventer.
At De Kuip, it gets ugly: six straight Eredivisie wins and an aggregate score of 20-3. The visitors’ last victory in Rotterdam came in April 2015.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst, back on the bench at the club he led to the 2016-17 title, is set for his first home match since returning. The bookmakers make Feyenoord heavy favourites at around 1.36, with Go Ahead Eagles out at 7.00.
Go Ahead Eagles sit second in the table after one round. Feyenoord, less flashy on the scoreboard, are still in the winners’ pack.
So this has the look of a meeting between two sides who have started well, but the long-term storylines point in opposite directions. And that’s where the head-to-head record starts to matter.
Feyenoord: plenty of chances, not enough cutting edge 
The derby win at Sparta was more one-sided than the score suggested. Feyenoord had 22 shots to 10 and posted 3.59 expected goals against 0.97 for their rivals.
That 1-0 final score tells you everything about the finishing. The reigning runners-up also allowed three clear chances, which could have made a mess of the afternoon in a derby.
Across their last five matches in all competitions, the record is excellent: five wins, 11 goals scored and only three conceded. The momentum is there. The finishing just needs to catch up.
The treatment room is busy. Bart Nieuwkoop, Gijs Smal (ankle), Jakub Moder (knee), Thomas Beelen (broken leg), Tsuyoshi Watanabe (ribs) and Jordan Bos (knee) are all out. Van Bronckhorst is having to patch together a defence.
Up front, Ayase Ueda, the club’s top scorer last season, passed up several good chances on matchday one. Luciano Valente, who struck the winner after a Gijvai Zechiel assist, looked the sharpest in attack.
A draw, though, is nothing new in this fixture. Both meetings last season ended level, home and away.
Van Bronckhorst still has attacking options. Ueda, Valente and Zechiel all had an impact in the derby, giving Feyenoord enough variety to test a deep defensive block.

Go Ahead Eagles: fast start, brutal away test 
The 4-1 demolition of Willem II was settled in eight minutes. Three goals shortly after the hour mark turned a tight contest into a procession.
It ended a five-match winless run in the league, stretching back to the 5-0 win over PEC Zwolle in early April. Joseph Oosting has got the machine moving again at just the right time.
The issue is away from Deventer. The Eagles have not won on the road in the league since beating Excelsior in March.
At De Kuip, the record is even uglier: their only win in Rotterdam, that 1-0 in April 2015, sits between a 5-0 defeat and an 8-0 thrashing. This one looks nasty on paper.
Three players stood out in the opener: Melle Meulensteen, Soren Tengstedt and Mathis Suray. Gerrit Nauber (broken leg), Robbin Weijenberg (knee) and Pim Saathof (knee) are still sidelined.
The Eagles are chasing back-to-back league wins, something they have not managed since February-March. Back then, they followed a 4-0 win over Heracles with a 1-0 success at Excelsior.
Willem II, newly promoted, were hardly top-tier resistance, though. Sunday will give a far better read on how good this team really is.

Our prediction: Feyenoord to win with a -1.5 goal handicap
The 20-3 aggregate across the last six Eredivisie home meetings says it all: when Feyenoord beat Go Ahead Eagles at De Kuip, it usually gets messy. The 5-0 and 8-0 results either side of the 2015 away win make that plain enough.
The 3.59 expected goals against Sparta suggest the attacking volume is already there. The finishing was missing, and Ueda tends to sort out that sort of dry spell.
Add in an away side that have not won on the road in the league since March and are missing three long-term absentees, and the case is clear. Feyenoord by two goals or more.
Feyenoord are also on a five-game winning streak in all competitions, scoring 11 and conceding three. There should be enough firepower to pull away.
