Lyon had a far messier time against Sparta Prague. They lost the first leg, then turned it around at home with a 3-0 win, thanks to goals from Nuamah and Maitland-Niles, to advance 4-2 on aggregate.
The draw on 3 August put Lyon as the seeded side in this tie, which explains the order of the games. The first leg is on Tuesday 18 August at 21:00 at the Sukru Saracoglu, with the return on 26 August at Groupama Stadium.
One last reference point is worth noting before getting into the detail. The most recent meeting between these two clubs came in January 2025, in the Europa League league phase, and ended 0-0.
Fenerbahce : two rounds cleared without conceding a goal 
The numbers from the last round tell the story: three goals scored, none conceded across the two legs against Sturm Graz. Fenerbahce built their place in the tie on control, not attacking fireworks.
That kind of stability changes the way you approach a first leg at home. The Turkish side can go after an advantage without overcommitting, knowing that conceding at the Sukru Saracoglu would make next week’s trip a lot more awkward.
The previous round against Gornik Zabrze had already asked for patience. Two straight opponents with little real ability to dictate play left Fenerbahce in charge of the tempo, and that will not be the case on Tuesday.
Talisca has emerged as the man for the big moments in this campaign. He was the one who converted the penalty that sealed qualification in Graz, a solitary flash in a tight game.
That fits the kind of tie these playoffs tend to produce: few clear chances, and a finish decided by a set piece or a penalty. Fenerbahce have already shown they can handle that sort of fight.

Lyon : a comeback that changes the shape of the tie 
Lyon produced their best performance of the summer when the pressure was on. The 3-0 win over Sparta Prague after a first-leg defeat says plenty about how the group responded when it mattered.
That turnaround has a direct effect on this tie. Lyon go into the two legs as the seeded team and get the second leg at home, two factors that matter in how they manage the first 90 minutes.
Nuamah and Maitland-Niles both scored in that second leg against the Czech side. Lyon are not relying on one man to provide the goals, and that makes life harder for the opposition back line.
The French club also still have a very specific European memory from their last Champions League run. It ended in the semi-finals against Bayern Munich, who went on to lift the trophy.
Seven years on, the target is more straightforward: get back to the league phase. First, they need to leave Istanbul without damage.
A draw, even a goalless one, would leave Lyon in a strong position before 26 August. That logic almost drags both teams towards a tight first leg.
