Fenerbahce vs Goztepe: Kuyt’s first game in charge against a side unbeaten in five Süper Lig

Fenerbahce rejected Ismail Kartal’s resignation once, then accepted it after the 2-1 derby defeat at Galatasaray, and Dirk Kuyt has run training this week as the man in interim charge.

His first match is at home to Goztepe on Saturday 31 October, kick-off 16:00 UK time, in round ten of the Süper Lig. Fenerbahce are fifth with 16 points from nine games, six points off the top. Goztepe are tenth on 12 after taking 2.2 points per game over their last five.

Kuyt’s sessions at the Can Bartu training ground this week started in the gym before moving outside for agility, coordination and passing work. He has three days of training to put his stamp on a squad that has lost its manager, its derby and four first-team players to injury or suspension.

Victor Osimhen scored twice in the first half at Galatasaray and Fenerbahce only pulled one back after the break. Before that came a 2-2 home draw with Slavia Prague in the Champions League, so Kuyt inherits a team without a win in two and with one in its last four.

That run also includes a 6-0 defeat at Aston Villa in Europe. In the league, the swings have been just as sharp: an 8-0 win over Eyupspor and back-to-back 3-0 wins over Caykur Rizespor and Alanyaspor sit alongside defeats to Besiktas and Galatasaray.

Goztepe’s last five league games have brought three wins and two draws, and they’ve scored at least twice in every one of their last six.

Fenerbahce are unbeaten in six meetings, but four of those were draws, and Goztepe’s last visit to this ground finished 1-1.

Fenerbahce: the league’s top scorers with half a back line missing Fenerbahce

Fenerbahce have scored 23 league goals in nine games, more than anyone else in the division. Sixteen of them came at home, again the best figure in the league.

Three of their four home league games this season ended in wins. The fourth was a defeat, and they’re unbeaten in their last four matches at home in all competitions.

Kuyt’s problems are at the back. Archie Brown is suspended, and Nathan Ake and Jayden Oosterwolde are injured, which leaves Skriniar and Peprah in the middle with Semedo and Mercan as the full-backs.

Marco Asensio is also injured and Amara Diouf is unavailable. Kante and Guendouzi should start in midfield, with Aydin, Kahveci and Greenwood behind the striker.

Fenerbahce’s league away form has been patchier, with a 0-0 at Gaziantep and the defeat at Galatasaray, but that matters less on Saturday. At home they’ve scored three or more in three of their four league games, including the 8-0 against Eyupspor and the 3-0 against Alanyaspor.

The striker is Kuyt’s main selection call: Romelu Lukaku or Vedat Muriqi. Either way, I’d expect the home side to have the ball and the chances, because that’s what they’ve done all season at home.

Goztepe: 12 goals in five unbeaten league games Goztepe

Goztepe’s run started straight after a 4-2 home defeat to Gaziantep. Since then they’ve drawn 2-2 at Alanyaspor and 2-2 at home to Caykur Rizespor, then won 4-0 at Eyupspor, 2-1 at Kocaelispor and 2-0 against Corum Belediyespor.

That’s 12 goals in five matches, with the 4-0 at Eyupspor the biggest away win of their season. Against Corum they were ahead after three minutes through Alexis Antunes, and Juan added the second before half-time.

Juan has six goals for the club this season and is expected to lead the line again alongside Andre Henrique, with Antunes playing behind the pair in a 3-4-1-2.

Two of their last three away games were wins, at Eyupspor and Kocaelispor, and the draw at Alanyaspor also had four goals in it.

Away from home Goztepe’s last five games have brought 1.6 points per game, against a Fenerbahce side averaging 1.6 at home over the same span. Those numbers are closer than the table gap suggests.

Rhaldney was forced off in the first half against Corum, and Allan Godoi, Furkan Bayir, Ogun Bayrak and Ibrahim Sabra are all doubtful, which could leave the back three of Bokele, Sundberg and Altikardes short of cover.

Probable lineup Fenerbahce: Ederson; Semedo, Skriniar, Peprah, Mercan; Kante, Guendouzi; Aydin, Kahveci, Greenwood; Lukaku
Probable lineup Goztepe: Ozcimen; Bokele, Sundberg, Altikardes; Kurtulan, Anjorin, Miroshi, Akonnor; Antunes; Henrique, Juan

Free Football Prediction: Fenerbahce vs Goztepe

Our prediction: Over 2.5 goals

Fenerbahce average more than two and a half goals a game in the league and have scored 16 in four home matches. Goztepe have scored at least twice in each of their last six league games.

The head-to-head points the other way, with four draws in six and a 1-1 on Goztepe’s last visit. I’d give more weight to what both sides are doing now: a home attack scoring freely, a defence without Brown, Ake and Oosterwolde, and a visiting front two that keeps finding the net.

Picking a winner on the day of a coaching change carries more risk than I’d like, so I’m backing three or more goals instead.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
