Everton vs Wolverhampton Wanderers: the same fixture, a year and one relegation later 
The third-round draw has thrown together two clubs who were already meeting at this stage last season. Wolverhampton won 2-0 at Molineux.
Twelve months on, the venue has flipped. This one is at Everton on Wednesday 9 September, kicking off at 19:45 UK time, or 20:45 in France.
The clubs arrive with very different badges beside their names now too. Everton are still in the Premier League, while Wolverhampton have dropped into the Championship after relegation.
That gap in divisions does not show up in the form book, though. The Wolves sit second in the second tier with seven points from three games and a goal difference of plus five.
The Midlands club also changed manager before the season got going. Cesar Peixoto signed a two-year deal after Rob Edwards departed four days earlier.
Both sides came through the previous round without breaking sweat. Everton brushed aside Preston North End 4-0, while Wolverhampton won 2-0 at Hillsborough against Sheffield Wednesday.
Everton are coming off a 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Sunday. The equaliser arrived in the 96th minute, on the final action of the game.
Wolverhampton were in Midlands derby action at Birmingham City on 5 September. The club is now packing three fixtures into a two-week stretch.
The numbers from the last round lean the Toffees’ way. Everton scored four against Preston North End, while the Wolves managed two at Sheffield Wednesday.
Thierno Barry hit a hat-trick in that win. The forward heads into this third-round tie brimming with confidence.
This is a one-off tie. One night will decide who goes through on Merseyside.

One man owned the night. Thierno Barry bagged a hat-trick, a strong enough case to start again on Wednesday.
League football looks much tougher for David Moyes’ side. On Sunday, their home game against Manchester United nearly ended in defeat.
Benjamin Sesko put the Red Devils ahead in the 88th minute with a header from a Luke Shaw cross. At that point, it was 2-1 to the visitors.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles struck back in the 96th minute, on the final play of the match. Everton salvaged a point that says more about spirit than style, but it still matters before a cup tie.
That told us two things about this team. They can throw away decent positions, but they keep going to the end, which counts for a lot in knockout football.
The transfer window did not solve every attacking problem. A move for Folarin Balogun fell through in the closing stages, something Moyes confirmed himself on Saturday.
So the goals will have to come from the players already in the building. Barry’s treble against Preston came at exactly the right time to paper over that miss.
Everton’s Premier League season has started without much sparkle. The late draw with Manchester United remains their standout result since the restart.
Moyes was also asked on Saturday about the collapse of the Balogun deal. He shut it down in a few words, with no interest in pointing fingers up the chain.

Wolverhampton Wanderers: a solid start back in the Championship 
Wolverhampton are playing their first Championship season since 2017-18. The spring relegation sent them straight back down.
But the early signs have eased plenty of those end-of-season doubts. Two wins and a draw from three matches put the Wolves second in the table.
A goal difference of plus five backs that up. Few second-tier sides can boast that kind of balance after three games.
Cesar Peixoto has made a decent start to life in charge. The Portuguese coach signed a two-year contract just days after Rob Edwards left.
Their cup run has followed the same pattern. The 2-0 win at Hillsborough over Sheffield Wednesday was built on a Sil Swinkels own goal and a Saheed Olagunju header.
September is a busy month for the Midlands side. A trip to Birmingham City on 5 September comes before this one, with West Bromwich Albion at home on 19 September.
That run of local derbies raises the question of squad management. Wolverhampton will have to balance the cup with the promotion push that is clearly the main target.
Last season’s meeting is still in the memory. The Wolves beat Everton 2-0 at the same stage, and that will be in the back of minds on their return to Merseyside.
The Wolves were still working in the market last week too. Bertrand Traore, a free agent since the summer, had a medical in Wolverhampton before signing for the club.
The contrast between these sides is simple enough. Wolverhampton went down a level but have picked up pace, while Everton are clinging to the top flight without convincing anyone.
