Everton vs Wolverhampton Wanderers – Free EFL Cup Prediction – September 16, 2026

Everton vs Wolverhampton Wanderers: four unbeaten games before hosting a Championship side EFL Cup

Everton have not lost in four Premier League matches and sit seventh. Wolverhampton are in the exact same spot, only in the Championship.

The third round of the EFL Cup takes place at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Wednesday, September 16, kicking off at 20:45 Paris time. Sky Sports+ will show it in the UK.

This one was originally due to be played on September 9. It was pushed back a week after the Liverpool-Tottenham date was moved to fit the Reds’ European schedule.

One game only, no second leg: ninety minutes or penalties. That was exactly the format that favoured Wolverhampton last season, when they beat Everton at this same stage at Molineux.

The two clubs also drew 1-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium in the 2025-2026 Premier League. Recent history does not point to a huge gap between them.

Still, Everton bring a big stat to the table: three clean sheets in their last five games in all competitions. Wolverhampton have just posted their first of the Championship season.

Sky Sports+ picked this tie because it pits a top-flight club against the seventh-placed side in the Championship. The division gap is real, but the form gap is far smaller.

Everton: three straight draws and Thierno Barry to be managed Everton

Everton beat Crystal Palace 2-0 on the opening weekend and then racked up three draws on the spin. Bournemouth 1-1, Manchester United 2-2, Tottenham 0-0 on Saturday night.

Two of those draws came deep into stoppage time. The Toffees were behind at Bournemouth and against Manchester United before clawing back a point at the death.

That refusal to fold matters more than any neat little stat. It explains a four-game unbeaten run built without really bossing many teams.

The 2-0 win over Crystal Palace remains Everton’s only league victory this season. Three draws after that leaves them on five points from four matches.

It is enough to put Everton seventh in the Premier League. The table is rewarding consistency, not fireworks.

The 0-0 at Tottenham brought a third clean sheet in five games. David Moyes has a base to work from.

The second round of the EFL Cup told a different story about the squad. Preston North End were ripped apart 4-0 away from home, with Thierno Barry scoring a hat-trick.

The issue for Everton is that striker. The club are short on true No 9s, so Moyes has to manage his minutes and that opens the door for 18-year-old Braiden Graham.

Jake O’Brien, Michael Keane, Hayden Hackney, Carlos Alcaraz, Jack Grealish and Tyler Dibling are all expected to start. It should be a fair bit of rotation, but not a skeleton crew.

Christian Norgaard remains out until after the September international break. Merlin Rohl, absent on Saturday at Tottenham, will be checked before the game.

Wolverhampton Wanderers: a fourth straight away trip and a defence that finally looks tidy Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolverhampton are into a fourth straight away match. West Ham, Birmingham City, Sheffield United, and now Everton.

The first two games in that run brought very little: just one point. A 4-2 loss at West Ham, then a 2-2 draw at Birmingham City.

Bramall Lane turned things around on Sunday. Raul Jimenez struck late to nick a 1-0 win at Sheffield United.

Most importantly, that brought the Wolves their first clean sheet of the Championship season. The numbers tell you plenty about where Cesar Peixoto still has work to do.

The Portuguese coach can at least be pleased with the league position: seventh, three points behind leaders West Ham with a game in hand. For an early spell in charge at Molineux, that is decent enough.

Their EFL Cup run has been clean: 3-0 against Port Vale, then 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday. Young defender Saheed Olagunju scored in that second-round win and should start on Wednesday.

Joao Virginia could make his first appearance for Wolverhampton against his former club. Ghislain Konan and Sean Neave, signed on the final day of the 2026 summer window, are also in the frame for a first start.

Nasser Djiga will not travel after going off in the second half at Sheffield United. Kieran Trippier, only just back from injury on Sunday, is unlikely to start.

Bertrand Traore, signed this summer, is at best a bench option on Wednesday night. Peixoto looks more likely to lean on players already used to his ideas.

This is Wolverhampton’s third EFL Cup game of the season after Port Vale and Sheffield Wednesday. They have not conceded in either round, and that matters before facing Premier League opposition.

Probable Everton line-up: Pickford ; O’Brien, Keane, Tarkowski, Mykolenko ; Garner ; Dibling, Hackney, Alcaraz, Grealish ; Barry.
Probable Wolverhampton Wanderers line-up: Virginia ; Tchatchoua, Olagunju, T. Gomes, Konan ; Bo. Traore, Doyle ; Neave, James, R. Gomes ; Jimenez.

Football Prediction Everton vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Our prediction: Everton to win

Everton have kept three clean sheets in their last five matches and have not lost in four league games. Wolverhampton only posted their first clean sheet of the Championship season on Sunday.

The physical angle points the same way: the Wolves are on a fourth straight away trip and should field a changed side, with several players set for first starts. Everton, by contrast, showed in the last round that they can crank it up in cup football, with a 4-0 win and a Thierno Barry hat-trick at Preston.

We are backing Everton to get it done at Hill Dickinson Stadium. The gap in squad quality is still real, and freshness clearly sits with the Toffees.

First, a word on our free tips

  • What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We give an opinion, a read of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal from nowhere… and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks obvious, nothing really is. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, at some point, you will.
  • The smart move is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live. And above all: do not chase losses, because that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If you feel it is taking too much space in your life, making you angry or putting you under pressure, take a break. And if you need to, speak to a specialist organisation. That is what it is there for.
  • In the end, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never go away, even with the best analysis in the world.
  • Important reminder: betting is banned for minors and must follow the law in your country. Gambling can quickly go off the rails (money losses, family tension, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.

No commitment from us

Our tips are not a contract. They have no legal force. In plain English: you cannot use them to demand anything if a bet goes wrong.

Information changes

A tip is always based on what we know when it is written. But in the meantime, a team sheet changes, a player gets injured, the weather turns nasty… and the analysis can soon be out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.

Your role

Before you bet, check that betting is legal where you are. If it is not, that is your responsibility, not ours.

Responsible gambling first
