Premier League: Enzo Fernandez fires a parting shot at Chelsea

A sharp-edged unveiling

Enzo Fernandez used his Manchester City unveiling to make his feelings about his former club plain enough. The 25-year-old Argentine described City as a club “built to win” and “the most successful side in England in recent times”. The comparison with Chelsea did not need spelling out.

The midfielder also pointed to City’s structure as a key reason for the move. In other words, he was laying into the instability at Stamford Bridge, where the plan has shifted repeatedly since he arrived. The message was clear: he believes he has joined a club that actually knows where it is going.

146 million and a frantic late scramble

City spent 146 M€ in the final hours of the window to prise him away. The fee puts the deal among the biggest ever completed between two English clubs.

The exit set off a chain reaction in London. Chelsea first moved for Lamine Camara at Monaco, before turning to Manu Kone at AS Roma. Both deals collapsed late on. The Blues lost their most expensive midfielder and never replaced him.

Enzo Fernandez, meanwhile, arrives at the Etihad with World Cup winner status and plenty of Premier League mileage already under his belt. City haven’t bought a punt here, they’ve paid for a proven asset.

It sets up an edgy reunion

For City, the move fills a need in midfield. The club reshaped the department this summer and wanted a player who can keep the engine running across a four-competition season.

What comes next is where it gets messy. A player who talks up his new club by taking digs at the old one always adds spice to the reunion. Chelsea and City meet in the league this season. The British press will keep those quotes on ice until then.
