Edmonton Oilers vs Detroit Red Wings: a banged-up Oilers blue line against a Red Wings penalty kill at 69.4%
Edmonton has lost two regulars in a week. Mattias Ekholm hit his head on the ice against Carolina on Thursday and is out for at least a week, and goaltender Devon Levi went on injured reserve on October 23, with Matt Tomkins recalled on an emergency basis.
Neither absence has slowed the Oilers’ offense. They lead the NHL with 4.6 goals per game, convert 35.3% of their power plays and sit at 8-2-1. They host the Detroit Red Wings at Rogers Place on Monday, October 26, with puck drop at 9:30pm ET (7:30pm local).
The one blemish is Saturday. Toronto came to Rogers Place and won 7-2, with Nylander scoring twice, including his 300th career goal, and Draisaitl scoring both Edmonton goals. That loss ended a three-game winning streak.
Detroit is 4-4-3 and finishing a western road trip that started with a 5-2 win in Vancouver and continued with a 1-4 loss in Calgary on Saturday. The Calgary result ended a six-game point streak (3-0-3) for the Red Wings.
Both teams played Saturday, so each has one day of rest. The Red Wings only have a short hop from Calgary, and the Oilers are on game three of a five-game homestand.
The teams split their two meetings last season. Detroit won 4-2 at home on October 19, 2025, and Edmonton won 4-1 at Rogers Place on December 11, when Hyman scored a hat trick and McDavid added four assists. I’d expect Monday to look more like the second game than the first.
Edmonton Oilers: McDavid has 33 points and Draisaitl has scored in six straight
McDavid has 33 points in 11 games, eight goals and 25 assists, and has registered a point in every game this season. Draisaitl has about 23 points, and his goal streak stands at six games with nine goals in that span.
The 6-5 shootout win over Carolina on Thursday showed both sides of this team. McDavid and Draisaitl each had two goals and three assists, Nugent-Hopkins scored on the power play and then won it in the shootout in his season debut, and the Oilers still gave up five goals.
Coach Mike Babcock, hired in June after Kris Knoblauch was fired on May 14, has a team that scores freely and defends poorly. Edmonton allows 3.2 goals per game and kills only 72.4% of penalties, 23rd in the league.
Tristan Jarry is the projected starter. He’s 2-0-1 with a .873 save percentage and a 2.98 goals-against average, numbers recorded before Saturday’s game, when he made 25 saves on 31 shots against Toronto. With Levi on injured reserve, Jarry has little competition for the net.
Jason Dickinson also went on injured reserve around October 22, and Colton Dach was activated to fill the gap. Babcock said Ekholm would be out for “a period of time,” which takes an experienced defenseman out of the lineup for at least a week.
The Oilers shoot 18.5%, the highest rate in the league, on only 24.8 shots per game. That efficiency is what makes them dangerous against a Red Wings team that allows plenty of chances on the penalty kill.

Detroit Red Wings: 2.7 goals a game and a penalty kill ranked 26th
Detroit’s best night of the trip came in Vancouver. Lucas Raymond scored twice, one on the power play, and added an assist in a 5-2 win, with Wallinder, Rasmussen and Finnie also scoring. Arvidsson, signed on July 1 for two years and $10 million, picked up two assists.
John Gibson’s evening that night was strange. He stopped four of five shots and left after two periods, listed with an upper-body issue that coach Todd McLellan later said was something in his eye. Postava made seven saves in relief in his NHL debut, and Gibson was back in net on Saturday.
Calgary beat him 4-1. The Flames went 2-for-2 on the power play, Farabee had a goal and two assists, and Copp scored Detroit’s only goal. Gibson made 21 saves and is the projected starter again, with a .871 save percentage and a 3.36 goals-against average before that game.
The Red Wings score 2.7 goals per game, tied for 22nd, and kill 69.4% of penalties, 26th. Their power play runs at 22.2%, and they average 29.9 shots per game, more than Edmonton.
The absences pile up behind the starters. Tarasov, Kasper and Appleton are out, and Edvinsson is on the non-roster list over a contract dispute. Larkin, who asked for a trade in June, is still on the roster and was projected on the second line on Saturday.
DeBrincat leads the team with six goals and 12 points, and Raymond has about 11 after his three-point night in Vancouver. Seider has five points from the blue line.

Our prediction: Edmonton Oilers -1.5 (puck line)
Edmonton scores 4.6 goals per game and runs a 35.3% power play. Detroit kills 69.4% of penalties and has a projected starter with a .871 save percentage. Those two numbers together point to a multi-goal Oilers win, and McDavid hasn’t been held off the scoresheet once this season.
The Oilers’ defense is the risk. They allow 3.2 goals per game, they’ve lost Ekholm and Levi in the same week, and Toronto put seven past them on Saturday. Detroit can score on the power play at 22.2%, against an Edmonton penalty kill at 72.4%.
The Oilers moneyline is likely to be priced too short when it’s posted, so the puck line is the better play. No odds had been released at the time of writing. I’d back Edmonton to win by two or more at home, with Draisaitl’s goal streak and McDavid’s point streak both on the line.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
