NHL: Devils bury Rangers 7-1 behind a four-goal second period

The second period decides it

Newark never got a contest. New Jersey scored four times in the second period on Thursday night and beat the Rangers 7-1. Luke Hughes had two of those four goals.

Nico Hischier, Arseny Gritsyuk, Evan Rodrigues, Cody Glass and Stefan Noesen also scored. Timo Meier, Dougie Hamilton, Brett Pesce, Dawson Mercer and Amadeus Lombardi each finished with two assists, so the damage came from all over the lineup. Nico Daws stopped 18 shots.

A first for the Rangers this season

Pavel Dorofeyev scored New York’s only goal. The Rangers had not allowed more than three goals in a game this season until this one. Dylan Garand started in net and gave up four goals on 13 shots.

Six different Devils scored, and five more players collected two assists apiece. Few nights hand a team that kind of spread.
