Detroit Red Wings vs St. Louis Blues: a Blues attack shut out twice running heads to Little Caesars Arena NHL

St. Louis went into Thursday’s home game against Boston without a goal in 123 minutes and 55 seconds. Carolina beat the Blues 4-0 on 24 October, and Montreal won 2-0 three nights later even though St. Louis outshot the Canadiens 46-20 and Jacob Fowler made 46 saves.

The Blues then start a road swing on Saturday, 31 October, at Little Caesars Arena, with puck drop at 1:00pm ET. They’re 5-6-1 overall and 2-4-0 away from Enterprise Center.

Detroit went into Thursday at 5-4-3 with 13 points, eighth in the Atlantic and three points outside an Eastern playoff spot. The Red Wings host Chicago on Thursday, so they’ll stay home for both games, while St. Louis plays Boston at 7:00pm CT and then flies to Michigan.

Neither team plays Friday, so there’s no back-to-back. Both get one day of rest, but only one of them has to travel on it.

Detroit won both meetings last season, 6-4 at home on 25 October 2025 and 5-2 in St. Louis three days later. This is the first of two games this season; the second is on 10 November in St. Louis.

Detroit Red Wings: DeBrincat leading the way, and a penalty kill ranked 30th Detroit Red Wings

Alex DeBrincat has 6 goals and 13 points, the best on the team. Lucas Raymond has 11 points, 8 of them assists, and Viktor Arvidsson, who signed a two-year deal on 1 July, has 10 points with 5 goals. Emmitt Finnie has added 5 goals in his 8 points.

The last result was a comeback. Detroit trailed in Edmonton on Monday, Dylan Larkin tied it 6-on-5 at 18:43 of the third period, and Raymond scored the only goal of the shootout in a 4-3 win. Michal Postava made 25 saves in his first NHL start.

The penalty kill is the weak point, and it’s a big one. Detroit kills 65.9% of penalties, 30th in the league, while the power play runs at a respectable 21.4%. Against a Blues power play at 21.9%, the Red Wings have to stay out of the box.

The goaltending picture isn’t settled. John Gibson has started eight games and is 3-4-1 with a 3.44 goals-against average and a .867 save percentage. Daniil Tarasov, 1-0-2 with a 1.40 average and a .940 save percentage, is day-to-day and practising, and Postava is 1-0-0. Gibson was expected in net on Thursday, which leaves room for someone else on Saturday.

Detroit has two defensemen close to returning. Albert Johansson and Simon Edvinsson are both expected back around 31 October, Edvinsson after spending time on the non-roster list since 14 October. Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton remain on injured reserve until around 12 November. The Red Wings allow 25.7 shots a game, ninth-fewest in the NHL.

St. Louis Blues: 2-4-0 on the road and a goalie split that has gone wrong St. Louis Blues

St. Louis outshot Montreal by 26 on Tuesday and averages 28.1 shots per game, and its 10.4% shooting rate is better than Detroit’s 8.7%. What changed in the last week is that the pucks stopped going in.

Mason McTavish, acquired from Anaheim on 26 June for two first-round picks, leads the team with 6 goals and 10 points. Jimmy Snuggerud also has 6 goals. Robert Thomas, the captain, has 6 points and needs one more assist to tie Brian Sutter’s 333 points for fourth in franchise history.

In goal, the split has tilted one way. Joel Hofer is 4-3-1 with a 2.40 average and a .917 save percentage. Jordan Binnington has a 4.10 average and an .845 save percentage in his four appearances, including the Montreal game in which he stopped 18 of 20. The Blues haven’t said who starts on Saturday.

The injury list is long and mostly up front. Dillon Dube is out eight weeks from 10 October with a neck injury, Alexey Toropchenko went on injured reserve on 5 October, Ross Johnston is on injured reserve with a lower-body problem, and defensemen Logan Mailloux and Tyler Tucker have both been out since 28 September.

The penalty kill is the part of the team that has held up. St. Louis kills 84.4% of penalties, seventh in the league, and allows 27.9 shots a game. Before the two shutouts, the Blues had beaten Winnipeg 2-1 on 20 October and Vegas 6-2 on 22 October, with Justin Barron, a waiver claim on 27 September, recording four points against the Golden Knights.

Probable lineup Detroit Red Wings: DeBrincat, Finnie, Arvidsson; Brandsegg-Nygard, Larkin, Raymond; Rasmussen, Copp, Compher; Mazur, Danielson, Kolesar. Defense: Chiarot, Seider; Wallinder, Faulk; Englund, A. Johansson. Goalie not announced at time of publication.
Probable lineup St. Louis Blues: Holloway, Thomas, Snuggerud; McMichael, McTavish, Berggren; Neighbours, Dvorsky, Buchnevich; Suter, Kaskimaki. Defense: Broberg, Carlo; Fowler, Parayko; Barron, Jiricek. Goalie not announced at time of publication.

Our prediction: Detroit Red Wings to win (moneyline)

I’m backing Detroit on home ice. St. Louis is 2-4-0 on the road, it’s coming off two straight shutout losses, and it plays a late game against Boston on Thursday before travelling for a 1:00pm ET start. Detroit sleeps in its own beds both nights and has the deeper scoring group, with DeBrincat, Raymond and Arvidsson all at 10 points or more.

The honest worry is the Detroit penalty kill. At 65.9% it’s 30th in the league, and St. Louis has a power play converting 21.9% of the time, so a parade to the box would hand the Blues the goals they haven’t found at even strength. Gibson’s .867 save percentage doesn’t inspire confidence either.

Detroit won both meetings last season by a combined 11-6, and the Red Wings have taken points in eight of their last ten games. No line was posted for Saturday at the time of writing, so check the price before betting: if Detroit opens shorter than 1.45, the Red Wings on the moneyline stops being worth it.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

No commitment from us

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
