Bregman and Hoerner take over in St. Louis
Two men did most of the damage. Alex Bregman and Nico Hoerner each collected four hits, each homered, and combined for six of the runs as the Chicago Cubs beat the Cardinals 7-3 on Monday night in St. Louis. Chicago piled up 14 hits and has now won three of its last four.
Bregman set the tone before the Cardinals could settle. He doubled home the game’s first run in the opening inning behind Seiya Suzuki, then led off the third by pulling Matthew Liberatore’s first pitch into the right-field seats for his 11th homer of the year. Two doubles, a home run, two RBIs, a full night’s work.
Rain pushed the first pitch back one hour and 46 minutes. It did nothing to cool the Cubs off.

Peterson steady, Hoerner closes it
David Peterson gave Chicago the innings it needed, holding St. Louis to two runs on three hits across five and two-thirds. He walked two and struck out three before handing the game to the bullpen with a comfortable cushion.
Hoerner kept adding to it. His run-scoring single in the fifth made it 5-1, and his two-run shot in the ninth capped a four-RBI night. That homer was his fifth of the season and his first since April 21, an odd gap for a hitter who barely missed all night.
Cardinals keep sinking
St. Louis has lost eight of its 11 games since the All-Star break. Jose Fermin launched a 407-foot solo homer in the second and Masyn Winn added two hits, but Liberatore never found his footing, charged with three runs on eight hits over three and two-thirds. The Cubs have three more games in this series to keep the pressure on.
