Atmane turns the tables on Tiafoe in Washington
Terence Atmane dumped Frances Tiafoe out in the first round of the Mubadala DC Open. Atmane came through 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the night from Monday to Tuesday. Tiafoe, the No. 6 seed, was on home soil in the Washington area, too.
Atmane made the difference on serve. He broke in the penultimate game, then held to seal it. A bit of payback for the Frenchman, who had lost to Tiafoe in the opening round at Wimbledon.

Fritz and Musetti move on
Third seed Taylor Fritz handled Belgian Zizou Bergs 6-3, 6-4. It was the American’s first match since his Wimbledon quarter-final loss to Alexander Zverev. He saved all four break points he faced.
Lorenzo Musetti advanced after Matteo Arnaldi retired while trailing 6-0, 3-1. The Italian was back from injury after being out since early May. Aleksandar Vukic, Kei Nishikori and Alejandro Tabilo also made it through to the second round.
The draw opens up
Tiafoe’s exit blows the top half wide open. Atmane has started brightly and looks in good shape for the rest of the week. Among the seeds, Fritz remains Washington’s biggest threat.
