Round 22 of the NRL kicks off in style in Townsville, with a huge clash at the sharp end of the ladder between the Cowboys and the Roosters. Plenty is on the line for both sides, and fans should be in for a game played at full tilt.
Todd Payten and his men head into this one brimming with confidence after killing off the Broncos’ title hopes in front of their own crowd. The Roosters, meanwhile, keep rolling, backed by an impressive five-game winning streak.
Even though the Cowboys sit some way behind the Tricolours in the standings, their win over the Chooks at Magic Round proved they’ve got the tools to rattle the favourites.
The Cowboys keep grinding 
Despite the doubts around their form, the Cowboys delivered a valuable 18-10 home win over the Broncos. Faced with the raw power of their local rivals, they produced a superb defensive effort to smother the visitors’ attack.
The hosts also showed some bite in attack, averaging 10.2 metres per carry and breaking the line five times. But there’s still work to do: 39 missed tackles and the metres conceded after contact would have hurt badly against a more clinical side.
After finishing last season in a disappointing 12th, North Queensland are closing in on the finals spot they’ve been chasing. The battle between Scott Drinkwater and James Tedesco at fullback, plus the heavyweight scrap between Jason Taumalolo and Naufahu Whyte, should shake the stadium to its foundations.

The Roosters keep their cool 
On the road in Newcastle, the Roosters showed steel to steal a 23-22 win in the dying moments. Trailing 10-6 at the break, the Sydney side soaked up the pressure before landing the match-winning drop goal in the 77th minute.
Without much of the ball at 47%, the Tricolours leaned on their discipline to stay alive, averaging 8.5 metres per carry and breaking through the line five times. Like their opponents this week, they were far from flawless, missing 39 tackles and giving the Knights chances they probably should have done more with.
That ability to win ugly says plenty about the maturity of a Roosters squad that looks fully in control of its own run-in.
An arm-wrestle looks likely
Tom Dearden’s absence in the halves is a major blow for the Cowboys. Without their chief playmaker, building pressure and sustaining it for 80 minutes will be a tough ask against a Roosters defence that knows every trick in the book.
North Queensland still have a live chance, though, thanks to the energy of their home crowd and the momentum from that win over Brisbane. Expect a bruising, tight contest, with it possibly coming down to the final 10 minutes.
