Premier League: Chelsea sink United, Carrick hangs by a thread

Rogers breaks United after the break

Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, in the opening game of Premier League matchweek nine, and left Michael Carrick’s position looking close to untenable. United have not won since September 10. This was a ninth straight game without a victory.

The first half gave the visitors reasons for hope. Bruno Fernandes came back into the starting eleven after his falling-out with Carrick, and he and Amad Diallo each missed a one-on-one against Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders. Matheus Cunha thought he had scored from a set piece in the 34th minute, but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside.

Then the plan fell apart. Five minutes after the restart, Morgan Rogers burst through a wide-open United defence after a turnover in the visitors’ half and chipped Senne Lammens for the opener.

Martinez sent off, Palmer converts

The afternoon got worse for United on the hour mark. Lisandro Martinez was sent off for an elbow to Wesley Fofana’s throat, and Cole Palmer scored the resulting penalty in the 64th minute. Estevao had a third goal chalked off for a margin of a few millimetres in the 71st, and Bryan Mbeumo smashed a late effort against the bar for United.

The table now tells the story. United sit 16th, a single point above the relegation zone, with nine games gone and no way of pointing to a trend that is moving the right way. Chelsea, who lost at home to Tottenham a week earlier, are fourth and level for now with Brighton and the podium places.

Carrick has been under pressure for weeks, and a performance that collapsed once Rogers struck will not buy him time.
