Grimaldo breaks Levante after VAR strikes twice
Atlético Madrid beat Levante 2-0 on Saturday in matchday 11 of La Liga, their ninth league win of the season, and moved top of the table for now. Barcelona play Alavés at 9 pm Paris time, so the lead may not last the night.
Diego Simeone’s side set the tempo from the start. Morten Hjulmand had a goal ruled out by VAR in the 17th minute, then Lee Kang-in and Marcos Llorente both tested the home defence between the 25th and 29th minutes. The pressure paid off in the 36th minute, when Alejandro Grimaldo struck cleanly for the opener. It was his fourth league goal since he arrived at the club this summer.

Giuliano Simeone adds the second
David Hancko thought he had doubled the lead in the 54th minute, but VAR spotted an offside and took it away. Atlético did not have to wait long for a legitimate second. Alex Baena set up Giuliano Simeone in the 62nd minute, and the coach’s son made it 2-0 in front of his father’s bench.
For Levante, the picture is bleak. Luis Castro’s team have won only twice in 11 league games and keep sliding down the standings. Atlético, by contrast, have put the pressure on Barcelona, who still have to answer in the evening game.
