Vigo are talking to the player, Istanbul are not
Batista Mendy has become one of the busiest files of deadline day. Foot Mercato reports that Celta Vigo and Istanbul Basaksehir have both accelerated for the midfielder in the last few hours, and the Galicians are the ones already speaking directly to him.
Nothing is signed. Deadline day rewrites itself every twenty minutes. Celta have had him on their list for several days, though, and right now they look like the club in front.
Others have circled before them. Villarreal and Werder Bremen were both linked a few weeks back, so his name has been travelling around Europe for a while.

Sevilla could not afford to keep him
The 26-year-old spent last season on loan in Andalusia. Sevilla passed on the option to buy, and the reasons were financial rather than sporting. The loan still did its job, putting him back in front of scouts in a major league.
He remains a Trabzonspor player with a contract expiring in 2027. That date is doing a lot of work here. One year left means one last realistic chance to bank a fee before he walks away on a free.
Things are not calm in Turkey either. Trabzonspor were knocked out of Europa League qualifying by Ferencvaros, a bruising night followed by a manager departure that convinced nobody. Not the sort of season anybody rushes to stay for.
Celta shop where they can afford to shop
Vigo are never going to outbid the top of La Liga for an established midfielder. So they go looking for players who already know Spanish football and whose price drops as the window closes. Mendy ticks both boxes.
Whether Istanbul come back at them in the final hours is the only thing left to find out.
