The rookie gets his shot

Thursday belongs to Carson Beck. The Cardinals rookie quarterback opens the preseason in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, against the Carolina Panthers. His first start, and it lands on a stage.

Coach Mike LaFleur confirmed it Tuesday. Beck sits third on the depth chart, behind Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew II. Preseason exists for exactly this, though: turn the young arm loose and see what holds up.

Arizona spent a third-round pick on him this year. At 23 he shows up with mileage, five seasons split between Georgia and Miami, 88 touchdowns, a completion rate flirting with 70 percent.
