A stay of execution at Old Trafford
Michael Carrick keeps his job at Manchester United, at least for the moment, and not necessarily by choice. The Sun reports that the club planned to sack the head coach this week but could not agree on a replacement, which bought him time.
The paper’s version has not been confirmed by United. It lands a day after Carrick was confirmed on the touchline for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea, following the fallout from the heavy defeat at home to Bournemouth.

Fans versus players
On Sky Sports’ paper review, Clinton Morrison and Darren Ambrose argued that supporters have kept Carrick afloat, directing their anger at the players after the Bournemouth loss instead of the coach.
That fits a season in which the pressure has swung between dressing room and dugout. Names such as Eddie Howe have been floated in the English press as possible successors, but according to The Sun nobody has been agreed on.
Chelsea as the next test
Stamford Bridge now looks like a deadline in all but name. Another poor result in London would put the question of a change back on the table, and a club that could not settle on an alternative this week may find the choice easier to make by Sunday.
