MLB: Campusano walks it off in the 10th as Padres edge Yankees

Campusano jumps on the first pitch

One swing, first pitch, game over. Luis Campusano did not wait around in the bottom of the 10th on Thursday night in San Diego, turning a sinker into a two-run homer that handed the Padres a 3-2 win over the Yankees.

Dustin Harris opened the inning at second as the automatic runner. Paul Blackburn punched out Xander Bogaerts on three pitches and looked in control of the situation. Then Campusano stepped in and swung at the first thing he saw, a sinker that landed roughly 394 feet deep in the left-field stands. Sixth homer of his season. Second walk-off.

Mason Miller took the win over two innings of work, though he had made the night harder on himself first, giving up a run-scoring single to Spencer Jones in the top of the 10th that briefly put New York in front.

Half a game, and the wild card picture shifts

San Diego (74-67) climb back above Arizona (74-68) for the National League’s last playoff spot. Half a game separates them. Some context for how badly the Padres needed this one: they had won once in their previous six.

New York wear the damage. The Yankees (80-61) sit four back of Tampa Bay (84-57) in the American League East, and their cushion over Boston (77-65) in the wild card race is down to three and a half games.

Neither starter left with a decision. Max Fried gave the Yankees 5 2/3 innings, one run and four hits, walking one and striking out four. Walker Buehler went five for San Diego: three hits, a run, two walks, six strikeouts.

Two innings San Diego should have finished it in

The Padres drew first blood in the second. Ty France doubled, the first of two extra-base hits on his night, Jackson Merrill dropped a sacrifice bunt to move him to third, and Bogaerts lined a single into center.

Ben Rice answered in the third. Buehler hung a slider and Rice sent it about 443 feet over the center-field wall, his 36th of the season.

The ninth looked like the ending. France doubled again, Merrill got hold of a deep fly that Cody Bellinger ran down in left, and David Bednar then retired Austin Hays. One extra inning was the price for walk-off win number 10.
