Cairns Taipans vs Brisbane Bullets: the Sunshine Stoush under the numbers
The Cairns Taipans host the Brisbane Bullets at Cairns Convention Centre on Thursday 8 October, with tip-off at 10h30 Paris time. It is the Queensland derby the league calls the Sunshine Stoush, and both teams arrive from very different Saturdays.
Cairns sit at 2-3 after a 107-95 comeback win at Melbourne United that ended a two-match losing streak. Brisbane are 2-2 after a 109-99 overtime defeat at home to Tasmania, having opened the season with two wins.
Momentum belongs to the hosts, but the roster evidence leans toward the visitors. The tension between those two facts frames this prediction.
The crossed results are close: Cairns beat Tasmania 93-87 earlier this season, and Brisbane lost to the same opponent after leading by 14 at halftime. Neither result separates the two teams by much.
Defence is the shared question, since Cairns allowed 111 points to Sydney and 98 to New Zealand, while Brisbane conceded 109 in 45 minutes to Tasmania. Points should be available at both ends in Cairns.
Cairns Taipans Analysis
Cairns are 2-3 after Saturday’s 107-95 win at John Cain Arena. They trailed by nine heading into the fourth quarter and outscored Melbourne 35-12 in the final period.
The comeback opened with the first 11 points of the quarter in just two minutes. A team that was described as disjointed in a 98-75 loss to the Breakers on Wednesday had changed its posture within three days.
Jaylon Brown scored 6 points through three quarters and 14 in the fourth, finishing with 20. Keanu Pinder led the team with 27 points, Reyne Smith added 21 and Jack McVeigh finished with 20 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.
McVeigh had shot 1 of 11 from three against the Breakers, so his recovery matters for floor spacing. Four scorers at 20 or more shows a balanced attack when the shots fall.
The decisive point for Cairns is defensive consistency, because 111 allowed to Sydney and 98 to New Zealand cannot be repeated against a balanced Brisbane lineup. The home crowd helps, but it does not stop shots.

Brisbane Bullets Analysis
Brisbane are 2-2 after winning their first two games, including a 103-95 victory over Illawarra. The next two games brought a loss to the defending champion Sydney Kings and a 109-99 overtime defeat to Tasmania.
Against Tasmania the Bullets led by 14 at halftime, then lost the third quarter 34-18. Regulation ended 91-91, and Tasmania shot 7 of 9 in overtime.
Tyrell Harrison scored 24 points with 12 rebounds, while Nate Hinton and Max Mackinnon each added 21. Three scorers at that level means the load is shared across the roster.
Arnas Velicka has been described as sensational across the opening fortnight, orchestrating the offence with poise. Sydney’s perimeter defence was built to shut him down, and the Bullets still scored 99 against Tasmania without a single overwhelming performance.
The decisive point for Brisbane is finishing the job after a strong start. The Bullets have shown they can build a lead, and the Cairns defensive numbers give them a chance to build another.

Free NBL Prediction: Cairns Taipans vs Brisbane Bullets
Our prediction: Brisbane Bullets win
Brisbane have three scorers at 21 points or more from their last outing, plus Velicka running the offence. Cairns have given up 111 and 98 points in two of their last three games.
The Bullets also have the experience of a 14-point halftime lead and a clear lesson in how not to lose it. Cairns have shown they can score, but the defensive record gives the visitors a path.
The balance of the Brisbane roster outweighs the momentum of the Cairns win. We back the Bullets to take the Sunshine Stoush.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute basket — and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses — that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation — that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
No commitment from us
Our predictions carry no contractual value. They have no legal standing. In short: you cannot rely on them to claim anything if a bet doesn’t come through.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and tip-off, a lineup can change (like Cairns Taipans’s, for example), a player picks up an injury — and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.

Before placing a bet, simply check that gambling is legal in your country. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.
