Cagliari vs Bologna: a 4-0 hiding at Monza and a visitor with one win all season
Cagliari lost 4-0 at Monza on Monday, and in one evening the goal difference they’d built over seven weeks disappeared. Before that trip, Fabio Pisacane’s side had conceded three goals in six league games and kept three clean sheets.
They’re still seventh on 13 points, which gives a fair idea of how well the rest of their start went. Wins at Parma, Atalanta and Udinese, each by a single goal, plus a 1-0 home win over Lecce, had them in the top half long before the Monza defeat.
Bologna are 15th with five points, one clear of the relegation zone, and their only league win came at Lecce on 11 October. Raffaele Palladino’s side lost 3-1 at home to Inter last weekend and have now conceded in each of their last nine matches.
Bologna have won four of the last six meetings, and Cagliari haven’t scored in their last two home games against them, losing 2-0 in October 2024 and 2-0 again in October 2025. Before those two defeats, Cagliari had gone seven home meetings without losing to Bologna, winning five of them.
The longer record also leans towards the visitors, with 18 Bologna wins to Cagliari’s 12 in the last 40 meetings and ten draws. The most recent game, at the Dall’Ara on 3 May 2026, finished 0-0.
Saturday’s game kicks off at 14:00 UK time at the Unipol Domus, and both managers have to plan beyond it. Cagliari travel to Roma on Tuesday and Bologna visit Milan on Wednesday, so some rotation in the following round is more likely than here.
Cagliari: four goals in three home league games, counting both ends
Cagliari’s three home league matches have produced four goals in total: 0-1 against Inter in late August, 1-0 against Lecce and 1-1 against Juventus on 11 October. They’ve averaged 38.5% of the ball at home, which fits a side set up to defend deep and break forward when space opens.
Daniel Maldini has done most of the scoring on those breaks. He has four league goals, one of them a penalty, already twice his total for the whole of last season, and he’s split them evenly between home and away.
The Monza result stands out because it doesn’t match anything else they’ve done. It was the first time this season Cagliari conceded more than once in a league game, and before it they’d let in three in six.
Pisacane will be without Riyad Idrissi and Mattia Felici, both out with cruciate ligament injuries, and Yael Trepy is a doubt. The expected side has Caprile in goal behind Ze Pedro, Mina, Rodriguez and Obert, with Adopo, Winks and Romano in midfield and Fadera and Maldini supporting Mendy.
Caprile has kept three league clean sheets already, and Adopo has chipped in with two assists from midfield. Their only home defeat came against Inter, by a single goal.

Bologna: six scorers, none with more than one goal, and Orsolini out
Six different Bologna players have scored in Serie A this season, and none has more than one goal. Dovbyk, Bernardeschi, Orsolini, Enem and Pobega are among them, and Orsolini is now out with a muscle injury.
Roberto Piccoli is also missing, sidelined for around three weeks with a hamstring strain, and Emil Holm is out until next year. That leaves Enem leading the line in Palladino’s 3-4-2-1, with Bernardeschi and Cambiaghi behind him. Cambiaghi and wing-back Miranda have two league assists each, the best figures in the squad.
Three of Bologna’s four league defeats have been by a single goal: 0-1 at home to Lazio, then 1-0 at Atalanta and 1-0 at Napoli. They failed to score in both of those away games, and the 2-1 at Lecce is the only league match away from home in which they’ve found the net.
Skorupski hasn’t kept a clean sheet in seven league games, though the 3-1 defeat to Inter was the only one in which Bologna conceded more than twice. Four of Bologna’s seven league fixtures have still finished under 2.5 goals, because the attack at the other end hasn’t produced enough to open games up.
The market makes Bologna favourites at around 2.39, with Cagliari at about 3.10. I think that price reflects Bologna’s reputation more than anything they’ve done since August.
Probable lineup Cagliari: Caprile; Ze Pedro, Mina, Rodriguez, Obert; Adopo, Winks, Romano; Fadera, Maldini; Mendy
Probable lineup Bologna: Skorupski; Darmian, Casale, Theate; Zortea, Ferguson, Pobega, Miranda; Bernardeschi, Cambiaghi; Enem

Our prediction: Under 2.5 goals (1.70)
Five of Cagliari’s seven league games have finished under 2.5 goals, and all three of their home games have. Bologna arrive without Orsolini and Piccoli and have scored in only one of their three away league matches, so the conditions for a low-scoring afternoon are all there at around 1.70.
The risk is that both defences have shown cracks. Monza scored four against Cagliari on Monday, and Bologna have conceded in nine straight games, so one early goal could change the shape of the match.
Cagliari’s home matches have still been tight from start to finish, and with Roma and Milan waiting in midweek, neither side has much reason to chase this game. A 1-0 or a 1-1 is the kind of score I’d expect from two sides whose last six meetings averaged just over two goals a game.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
