Cleveland pays its cornerback
The trade rumors are dead. Denzel Ward signed a two-year, $62.2 million extension with the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday, a deal that makes him the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL. It runs through 2029 and carries $52.3 million guaranteed.
At $31.1 million per year in new money, Ward vaults past the field at his position. The five-time Pro Bowler spent the offseason making clear he wanted to stay in Cleveland. The Browns just made sure he does.

A signal after the Garrett trade
The extension answers a question that hung over the team. When Cleveland dealt Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to the Rams on June 1, the move looked like the start of a teardown. Locking up Ward tells a different story. The Browns are keeping their best remaining defender rather than cashing him in.
Ward has anchored the Cleveland secondary since he arrived as a first-round pick in 2018. Paying him at the top of the market keeps that unit together heading into the season.
The cornerback market resets
Ward’s number becomes the new bar for veteran corners. The next one to the table has a figure to chase.
