A goalkeeper’s nightmare, then a rescue
Fifteen minutes in, Yehvann Diouf took too long over a clearance and Ludovic Ajorque pinched the ball off his feet. Tap-in. 1-0 Brest, and Nice’s fourth direct error leading to a goal in Ligue 1 this season, more than any other side.
It nearly got worse. In the 37th minute Diouf misplayed another restart and Kamory Doumbia, with an open net in front of him, slipped as he went to finish. Brest had 1.52 expected goals by the 43rd minute. Nice had 0.14. The Nice players had rushed over to console their keeper after the first goal, and on Friday night that mattered.

Wahi and Diop turn it around
Nice came out a different team. Elye Wahi, who had spent the first half straying offside, ducked in front of Kenny Lala at a corner and finished on the hour. Sofiane Diop, on as a substitute, made it 2-1 on 83 minutes after Wahi laid the ball back to him following a risky Brest short pass out from the back.
Then came the finish. Six minutes of added time, a tangle in the Nice box between Nice substitute Jansson and the young Brest replacement Kante, and a long VAR check from referee Guillaume Paradis. Penalty. Lala stepped up in the 11th minute of stoppage time and Diouf went the right way to push it away.
First points on the road
For Nice it was the first away win of the campaign, after a single away goal in the league before Friday, and it came after a 2-1 defeat at Lyon last Sunday. Brest, tenth before kick-off, outshot the visitors on target by seven to two and still went home with nothing. Wahi had a chance to wrap it up even earlier in stoppage time but ran into Gautier Lloris.
Brest play with plenty of chances and leave plenty of them unconverted. Nice, meanwhile, will take the three points and probably not watch the first half again.
