Braga vs Austria Vienne: one goal in 180 minutes, and a place in the tie decided by penalties 
Braga got through the Conference League third qualifying round with just one goal across the two legs. Dinamo Minsk were edged out 1-0 at home before a 0-0 draw away on 13 August.
The first leg of this play-off kicks off on Thursday 20 August at 20:00, at the Estadio Municipal de Braga. The return is set for 27 August at the Franz-Horr-Stadion in Vienna.
Austria Vienne came through a far messier previous round against Beitar Jerusalem. The Austrian club won one leg 2-1, lost the other 1-2, then booked their spot 4-2 on penalties on 13 August.
So both sides come into this one having squeezed through by the thinnest of margins. Neither has blown away its qualifying opponent, and neither attack has exactly been firing on all cylinders.
The league form points clearly towards the Portuguese side. Braga drew 2-2 at Moreirense on 9 August, not spectacular, but a decent away result in the Primeira Liga.
Austria Vienne, meanwhile, lost 0-2 to LASK the same weekend in the Austrian Bundesliga. Drawing a blank against the national champions just before a European play-off is not exactly a glowing sign.
The winners of this two-legged tie reach the Conference League league phase. That means the first leg in Portugal should start cautiously, with both sides unlikely to take wild risks.
The league-phase draw takes place on 28 August, the day after the second leg. In other words, both clubs are playing their entire European season over these two matches.

The third qualifying round against Dinamo Minsk was handled without conceding a goal. A 1-0 win at the Estadio Municipal, followed by a 0-0 away, was enough for Braga to progress.
The downside is obvious enough from the attacking numbers. One goal in 180 minutes against a Belarusian side does not scream control, let alone dominance.
The 0-0 on 13 August away from home backed that up. Braga managed the lead rather than chasing a bigger cushion, a sensible enough approach, but one that says plenty about the current state of the attack.
League action tells a slightly different story. The 2-2 draw at Moreirense on 9 August showed this team can score, but also that it leaves gaps when it pushes on.
Playing the first leg at home gives the Arsenalistas the chance to set the pace. The trip to Vienna on 27 August is the one they will fear, so the priority here is simple: stay in control.
A defence that has yet to concede in Europe, combined with an attack that is hardly setting the place alight, points to a tight game. Braga have no real reason to throw caution to the wind on Thursday.
Portuguese football returned in early August, and the schedule is already crammed. Braga have been juggling Primeira Liga matches with continental qualifying for two weeks.
That workload goes some way to explaining the caution shown in Belarus. Rotating smartly while still getting the job done was the most sensible call from the Portuguese staff.

Austria Vienne: penalties to survive, then a 0-2 loss to LASK 
Austria Vienne could not separate Beitar Jerusalem over 180 minutes. One leg was won 2-1, the other lost 1-2, and extra time failed to produce a winner, so penalties were needed.
The 4-2 shootout win on 13 August sent them through. Needing penalties to get past an Israeli side tells you plenty about where this Vienna team is right now.
Domestic form has only reinforced that sense of vulnerability. LASK beat Austria Vienne 0-2 on 9 August, with the Violets failing to find a way through.
A goalless Bundesliga outing followed by a qualification scraped out on penalties paints a clear picture. The team is physically fine, but it is struggling to turn chances into goals.
A trip to Portugal is a step up again in quality. Braga are operating at a far higher technical level than Beitar Jerusalem.
The Vienna plan is obvious: keep it tight and take damage limitation back to the Franz-Horr-Stadion. A low block and a focus on transition moments look the most sensible route on Thursday night.
The Austrian league has also only just got going, with that 0-2 defeat to LASK the first sharp warning sign. Bundesliga games and European extra time are not ideal for a squad at this level.
Even so, the 13 August penalty shootout showed some steel. A side that wins 4-2 from 12 yards is not the sort to fold the moment it concedes first.

Braga scored just once across their two games against Dinamo Minsk and did not concede at all. A side that sees out a tie in that sort of style has no real incentive to go gung-ho in a home first leg.
