Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Mainz 05: no points, 12 goals conceded in three rounds 
Borussia Mönchengladbach have taken nothing from their first three Bundesliga games. Three goals scored, 12 conceded, and a place second from bottom in the table.
That run cost Eugen Polanski his job, with the club sacking him on Sunday. The Rhineland side have become the first top-flight German club to change coaches this season.
Jan-Moritz Lichte is in charge on a temporary basis while a full-time appointment is expected during the international break. He knows the opposition well, having coached Mainz in the past.
Mainz 05 arrive with four points and a much clearer direction. A draw, a big win and a defeat make up their league start.
So where has that stylish August team gone? Impressive in pre-season, including a notable 2-1 win over Aston Villa, Borussia Mönchengladbach have completely fallen apart once the real stuff started. For Bundesliga matchday 4, the Foals return home on Saturday 19 September at 15:30, desperate to kick-start their season.

The big storyline is simple: Mainz are unbeaten in eight away games in domestic competition, while Gladbach are still hunting their first point.

It started with a 3-0 defeat at RB Leipzig. Given the opposition, that result was manageable.
What followed was not. On 5 September, Gladbach lost 4-3 at home to promoted Elversberg. That was the night the real crisis began at Borussia-Park.

Three goals scored across the same spell complete a lopsided picture. The attack has drawn a blank twice already.
The front line has also lost its main focal point, Tim Kleindienst, who is suspended after his red card against Freiburg. Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn is also out with a muscle injury.
The midfield is taking a hit too, with Zento Uno sidelined by a muscle issue and Enzo Leopold still recovering from an ACL tear. Kevin Stoger and Philipp Sander are expected to form the double pivot.
The back line is battered as well, with Daiki Hashioka (back), Yukhym Konoplya (knee) and Jens Castrop (shoulder) unavailable. Ko Itakura and Kevin Diks should partner up in central defence, with Joseph Scally and Lukas Ullrich alongside them.
The one real point of comfort is Borussia-Park, where they ended last season unbeaten in seven home games, with four wins and three draws. Isac Lidberg is set to lead the line with Franck Honorat and Wael Mohya out wide, and Hugo Bolin in the playmaking role despite the muscle issue that kept him out of training earlier this week before Mainz’s visit.

Mainz 05: two clean sheets to start, one slip since 
Mainz kicked off their season with a 9-0 thrashing of Krieschow in the first round of the German Cup on 23 August. The tone was set going forward.
They then put together two league games without conceding. A 0-0 draw with Paderborn, then a 5-0 win in Hamburg on 6 September.
That victory at the Volksparkstadion remains the season high point for Urs Fischer’s side. Four different scorers got on the sheet that day.
Matchday 3 snapped the run, with a 3-1 home defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt. Three down, Fischer’s players salvaged a little pride only late on through Phillip Tietz.
It is still their only defeat of the season, and it came at home, not on the road. That matters heading into an away trip.
Away form is Mainz’s strongest card: eight straight domestic games without defeat, including six wins and two draws.
Dominik Kohr (ankle), Silvan Widmer (knee), Eric Martel (knee) and Paul Nebel (groin) are ruled out. Kaishu Sano, Lee Jae-sung and Nadiem Amiri should operate through midfield.
Silas is also missing after an ankle fracture, which leaves Sheraldo Becker and Phillip Tietz as Mainz’s likely strike pairing. Stefan Posch, Fabio Gruber and Kacper Potulski are expected to make up the back line.

Mainz have not lost in their last eight away matches in domestic competition, winning six of them. Gladbach come into this one with zero points and 12 goals conceded in three league games.
Kleindienst’s suspension strips the hosts of their only genuine attacking reference, in a side already missing three defenders and two midfielders. A last-minute coaching change rarely fixes a back line that is shipping four goals a game.
Lichte has a full week to sort the structure out, but he has to do it against the league side he knows best. That only helps the visitors.
Mainz leave Borussia-Park with all three points.
