NHL: Blackhawks beat Jets in OT as Kane passes Housley

Levshunov ends it in overtime

Ninety-seven seconds. That is all Chicago needed in the extra frame. Connor Bedard slid a backhand pass across, Artyom Levshunov finished it, and the Blackhawks beat the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 on Thursday night. It was Levshunov’s third career goal and his first in overtime.

The Jets nearly made sure it never got there. Winnipeg controlled the final 40 minutes of regulation after Chicago outshot them 14-8 in the opening period, and Neal Pionk’s goal with 3:03 left forced the extra frame. Pionk finished with a goal and two assists. Kyle Connor added a power-play goal and now has a goal in four straight games and eight in seven.

Spencer Knight kept Chicago in front when it mattered. He made 31 saves, none bigger than a late outstretched pad stop on Pionk. Stuart Skinner stopped 24 for Winnipeg, which has still earned at least a point in each of his five starts.

Bedard, Nazar and a quiet record for Kane

Bedard scored too, on a 5-on-3 power play with 11:49 left, and he did it with two seconds remaining on the advantage. Patrick Kane picked up the assist. It was his 895th career helper, which moved him past Phil Housley for the most by an American-born player in NHL history.

Frank Nazar also scored in his first game back after a two-game suspension for an illegal head check, and Ryan Donato added his second goal of the season. Bedard was playing only his second game of the year, so the early returns on a full-strength Chicago group are encouraging.

The Blackhawks have now won two straight. Winnipeg leaves with a point, and Alex Iafallo scored his second goal of the season in the loss.
