Bayern Munich vs Union Berlin: seven points to one, and the numbers do the talking 
Bayern Munich have picked up seven points from a possible nine in the first three Bundesliga games. Union Berlin have managed just one in the same stretch.
That six-point gap after three matches leaves the Bavarians fourth and the Berlin side 16th. Bayern sit in fourth because they dropped points at Schalke, which cost them top spot.
Freiburg lead the way by two points, and a win on Friday would put Vincent Kompany’s side back in front. There is real value in the table here, even if the fixture looks badly one-sided.
The Bavarians are chasing a sixth win in seven competitive outings on Friday. Their season began with the German Super Cup win over Dortmund, then a 4-1 victory at Osnabrueck in the German Cup.
The key number is Union’s defence: 10 goals conceded in three league games, an average of more than three a match. No team in Germany has looked quite as fragile at the back in the early weeks.
Mauro Lustrinelli is already under pressure on the Union bench after back-to-back defeats. He is also missing a long list of players, including several natural defenders.
Kick-off is at 20:30 Paris time on Friday 18 September at the Allianz Arena. The real question is not who wins, but how many goals this turns out to be.

Bayern opened with a 5-1 win over Stuttgart, then were held to a flat 0-0 by Schalke 04. Last weekend they scraped past Elversberg 2-1, without ever looking especially convincing.
In that away trip to the promoted side, Bayern had 72% of the ball and produced 2.83 expected goals. Even so, they needed a Harry Kane strike to get over the line after being pegged back to 1-1 in the second half.
Two poor results against promoted teams in three league games is what stands out for Munich watchers. The control is there. The finishing has been the issue.
Harry Kane remains the main reference point in attack after scoring 73 goals in all competitions last season. He scored once and set up another at Elversberg, keeping his early-season form on track.
Michael Olise is the other major threat, having posted 15 goals and 19 assists in the Bundesliga last term. Jamal Musiala, Luis Diaz, Joshua Kimmich and Dayot Upamecano are all available for this home game.
The only notable absentee is in central defence, where Tarek Buchmann is still recovering from syndesmosis surgery. Jonathan Tah and Dayot Upamecano should therefore form the central pairing, with Konrad Laimer and Alphonso Davies behind them.
Bayern’s 2026 summer window also reshaped midfield, with Leon Goretzka leaving for Aston Villa and Nicolas Jackson returning to Chelsea at the end of his loan. Guerreiro also moved on as a free agent.
Brown arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt at left-back, while Moroccan striker Ismael Saibari was signed from PSV Eindhoven. None of that really touched the attacking spine, which still looks much the same as last season.

Union Berlin: a defence that needs rebuilding every weekend 
Union Berlin started with a promising 3-3 draw at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. Since then, it has fallen apart with a 4-0 defeat at Leverkusen and a 3-1 loss against Schalke 04.
Those two defeats both came by at least two goals, which points to a deeper structural problem rather than bad luck. Union finished 11th last season, and they are down in 16th now.
The injury list explains some of the mess at the back. Josip Juranovic, Andrik Markgraf, Marvin Friedrich and Stanley N’Soki are all out, leaving Lustrinelli without four defensive options.
The Swiss coach is likely to go with a centre-back pairing of Felix Uduokhai and Leopold Querfeld, with Tom Rothe and Christopher Trimmel on the flanks. Querfeld remains a useful threat going forward, having scored three Bundesliga goals last season and already netted this term.
Up front, the problems continue: Andrej Ilic and Oliver Burke are missing, with the latter coming back from an Achilles injury. Burke still managed 6 goals and 2 assists in the league last season.
Emmanuel Latte Lath, loaned from Atlanta United in the 2026 summer window, and South Korea’s Jeong Woo-yeong are expected to lead the line. One small comfort for Union: two draws have come in their last five meetings with Bayern.
Union’s summer business had been aimed at the back line, with Marvin Friedrich, Van Den Bosch and Uduokhai all arriving, the latter on loan from Besiktas. Diogo Leite, Doekhi and Kral all left in the same period.
Swiss midfielder Michel Aebischer, signed from Pisa in that same window, completes the rebuild. Trying to patch together an entire defence in one summer goes a long way to explaining the 10 goals shipped in three matches.
