Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao: fifteen home games unbeaten and a fast start with a five-goal blast 
Fifteen La Liga visits by Athletic Bilbao to Camp Nou, fifteen Barcelona home games without a defeat. That stat alone frames Thursday night, with kick-off at 21:00 Spanish time.
The Spanish champions head in on the back of a 0-5 thumping at Elche on Sunday, a statement opening to the campaign. Raphinha scored twice, Fermin Lopez added two more, and Karim Adeyemi got off the mark in Catalonia.
Athletic, meanwhile, started with a home beating. Sevilla left San Mames with a 3-1 win after the hosts went down to 10 men inside 11 minutes.
Edin Terzic replaced Ernesto Valverde this summer, and the early signs are grim: three pre-season defeats, seven goals conceded, then a losing start to the league. The fixture list has handed him the worst possible chance to put it right.
The head-to-head numbers twist the knife. Across the last six meetings, Athletic have scored once and Barca have netted 17.
The only real question is how heavy the scoreline gets, and whether Rodri makes his first appearance in blue and claret. The rest looks like routine work for Hansi Flick, who won’t want to waste the chance.
Barca also have a game in hand on most of their rivals. That staggered opening gives them a chance to jump straight back to the top of the table.
The last meeting between the sides came in March 2026, a 1-0 Catalan win at San Mames. Before that, Barca had put five past Athletic in the Spanish Super Cup in January 2026 and four past them in La Liga in November 2025.

Barca closed out 2025-26 with 94 points and 95 goals. That total explains why nobody blinked at the 0-5 win at Elche.
Raphinha opened the scoring from the spot in the 15th minute, Adeyemi made it two just before half-time, then the Brazilian added another in the 67th. Fermin Lopez wrapped it up with a brace in eight minutes.
The most telling detail came from the Catalan bench. Anthony Gordon came on in the 65th minute and delivered two assists in five minutes, including one with his very first touch.
Rodri could make his first appearance on Thursday after returning to training following minor back surgery. His move from Manchester City, confirmed on 18 August 2026, changes the pecking order in midfield.
There are two fitness concerns: Frenkie de Jong remains out with a knee ligament issue, with no return date given. Gavi, who picked up a knock at Elche, is only dealing with a bruise and is available.
Flick has a far stronger starting XI and replacements who can turn a match in five minutes flat. Against an already shaky Basque defence, that’s a nasty problem to solve.
The Catalan club are on the back of two straight league titles and arrive as clear favourites. After what they produced at Elche, nobody is likely to argue.
The only real concern is bedding in the new arrivals this early in the season. Flick has to find room for Adeyemi, Gordon and soon Rodri without upsetting a side already humming along nicely.
Pedri and Bernal should control the middle against an opponent short on rhythm. Whoever wins the ball in midfield will dictate how quickly the scoreline runs away.

Athletic Bilbao are leaking goals and arrive short-handed 
Seven goals conceded in their last three pre-season games, then three more on the opening weekend: Athletic’s defence is in trouble. Unai Simon had a rough afternoon against Sevilla.
The game was effectively over early. Yuri Berchiche’s red card in the 11th minute killed the Basques’ hopes, before Oso struck four minutes later.
Chidera Ejuke made it worse in the 51st minute, Isaac Romero added a third in the 57th. Aitor Paredes’ goal on 70 minutes only softened the scoreline.
Berchiche is suspended on Thursday. Unai Eguiluz, Daniel Vivian and Nico Serrano are all injured too, which leaves Terzic seriously short at the back.
The one source of encouragement is Nico Williams, who came off the bench against Sevilla alongside Aymeric Laporte. The winger could start and remains Athletic’s best weapon on the break.
Even then, Athletic have not won a league game at Camp Nou in 15 attempts. With a reshuffled back line and a coach still trying to find his feet, the margin for error is basically zero.
Against Sevilla, the Basques had more of the ball and more shots than their opponents. Possession without cutting edge gets you nowhere, least of all at Camp Nou.
A new coach, an unsettled team and three missing defenders: it’s a bad mix. Terzic may have to patch together an unfamiliar back line against Spain’s most dangerous attack.
Nico Williams remains Athletic’s only genuine threat on the counter against Barcelona. The problem is getting him enough ball high up the pitch.
