Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield as contract talks stall ahead of training camp

NFL: Baker Mayfield, Bucs still apart on new deal

No deal as camp opens

Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers walk into training camp without an agreement. ESPN reported Tuesday that the two sides sit far apart on a new contract, with the first practice set for Wednesday.

Mayfield enters the final year of the three-year, $100 million deal he signed in March 2024. His $33.33 million salary ranks 16th among NFL quarterbacks, a number that undersells what he has delivered since landing in Tampa Bay.

Mayfield holds his ground

Mayfield signaled he will not blink. Per ESPN, he feels comfortable playing out the season on his current terms, and comfortable playing under the franchise tag in 2027 if it comes to that.

The track record backs the stance. Mayfield joined the Bucs on a one-year, $4 million contract in 2023 to replace the retired Tom Brady, then earned back-to-back Pro Bowl nods and steered Tampa Bay to consecutive division titles.

The other side of the ledger

Last season complicates the pitch. Tampa Bay stumbled to 8-9 and missed the playoffs, handing the front office a counter to any push for a raise. Mayfield has thrown for 28,525 yards, 197 touchdowns and 101 interceptions across eight seasons with four teams.
