Australia are aiming to shake things up, while Turkey are finally back on the world stage
What makes this clash between Australia and Turkey so intriguing is that in a Group D that also includes the United States and Paraguay, nobody looks truly safe. There is no obvious heavy favourite, no real outsider either. Just two teams who know a strong start could quickly change the shape of their World Cup. For the Socceroos, the big-stage routine is now part of the package. Australia are at their sixth straight World Cup and come in off a run to the last 16 in Qatar. Turkey, meanwhile, are back on football’s biggest stage after 24 years away. It is a return long overdue, almost demanded, with this group looking talented enough to chase the kind of run that lit up 2002.
Australia arrive with their usual grit and a few certainties
Nobody talks much about Australia before a World Cup. They just turn up. Tournament after tournament, game after game, they have made life awkward for better-known opposition. And even if the warm-up results were not perfect, with a loss to Mexico and a draw against Switzerland, this is still a side that knows exactly what it is: disciplined, physical and rarely easy to handle. Tony Popovic can lean on several familiar leaders. Mathew Ryan remains the man at the back, Jackson Irvine brings legs and drive in midfield and Mathew Leckie still offers the sort of experience that matters when the lights are bright. Up front, Mohamed Toure is one of the brighter stories in the squad. After a strong second half of the season with Norwich, the young forward will be asked to turn Australia’s chances into goals.
The target is simple: stay in touch in a brutally tight group. That probably means getting something from this opening match. Australia also have one weapon worth watching — they can be dangerous from set pieces.
Turkey arrive with real ambition
For months, plenty have been tipping Turkey as one of the teams capable of causing a few headaches at this World Cup. And it is easy to see why. Vincenzo Montella’s side have kept racking up results and head to Canada with confidence that is hard to ignore. Seven wins from their last eight matches and an unbeaten run stretching back months tell the story of a team on the up. The quarter-final run at Euro 2024 already hinted at what this group could become. Now the job is to prove it on the global stage. Hakan Calhanoglu remains the creative hub in midfield, while all eyes will naturally drift to Arda Guler. At just 21, the Real Madrid midfielder could be one of the breakout stars of this World Cup.
The doubt over Kenan Yildiz does leave Turkey without another attacking threat, but with Orkun Kokcu, Baris Alper Yilmaz and Deniz Gul in the mix, there is no shortage of options going forward. On paper, Turkey probably have more natural quality. But in a tournament as unforgiving as a World Cup, that counts for very little.
Probable lineups:
Australia: Ryan; Italiano, Circati, Souttar, Herrington, Bos; Metcalfe, Irvine, O’Neill, Leckie; Toure
Turkey: Cakir; Celik, Demiral, Bardakci, Elmali; Calhanoglu, Yuksek; Guler, Kokcu, Yilmaz; Gul

World Cup 2026 Prediction : Australia vs Turkey
Australia to score at least one goal
Turkey look the more eye-catching side on paper, no question. Their recent form is strong and they have several players who can flip a match in an instant. But the Socceroos have spent years proving they know how to make these games uncomfortable. Their World Cup experience, their physical edge and their refusal to go away make them a dangerous opponent. Turkey’s defence has also shown cracks at times against teams that break quickly. With Turkey likely to have more of the ball, Australia should get space to attack. And with so much riding on an opening group match, it would be no great shock to see the Socceroos find the net at least once.

First, a word on our predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We offer an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal out of nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no risk-free bet. Even when something looks obvious, it is never really certain. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, at some point, you probably will.
- The smart play is to stay disciplined. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need for everyday life. And above all, do not chase losses. That rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your life, if it is getting under your skin or putting you under pressure, take a break. If needed, speak to a specialist organisation. That is what they are there for.
- In the end, responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and never goes away, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is forbidden for minors and must comply with the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast, with money losses, family tension and addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal force. Put simply: you cannot use them to claim anything if a bet fails.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know when it is written. But by the time you read it, a team line-up can change, a player can get injured, the weather can turn… and the analysis can be out of date fast. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your role
Before you bet, make sure gambling is legal where you are. If it is not, that is your responsibility, not ours.
