Walton swings at the first pitch he likes
Donovan Walton led off the bottom of the 10th with a two-run homer to right, and the Athletics had a 6-5 win over the Seattle Mariners overnight in West Sacramento. Michael Stefanic was standing on second as the automatic runner. Eduard Bazardo threw a sweeper on 1-1. Walton did not miss it.
That was his third hit of the night and a seventh win in nine games for an Oakland side sitting at 60-88 with no postseason business of its own. They have plenty of business with Seattle. This was a fourth win in five meetings with the Mariners this month.
Lawrence Butler collected three hits, including a two-run shot to right in the third that put the hosts 4-2 up. Jeff McNeil scored twice and drove in a run.

Seattle led with three outs to get
Randy Arozarena started the Seattle 10th on second. Chris Roycroft retired the first two hitters, then Julio Rodriguez hit a grounder that shortstop Alika Williams and second baseman Walton both dived at and missed. Arozarena scored the go-ahead run. Josh Naylor singled and stole a base behind him, putting runners on second and third with a chance to bury the game. Denzel Clarke dived into right-center and caught Lazaro Montes’ liner instead.
Montes had already produced the loudest swing of the evening. Seattle trailed by two in the sixth when Naylor reached on a fielding error by A’s reliever Scott Blewett. Montes came off the bench for Taylor Ward and sent the ball 430 feet over the wall in right-center to level the score at 4.
The wild-card maths keeps getting worse
Seattle fall to 69-79. They sit six games behind the third-place Cleveland Guardians for the last American League wild-card place, six behind Houston in the AL West and three behind Texas. Nights like this one are the reason.
George Kirby gave up four runs on nine hits across six innings, striking out five and walking two. Jeffrey Springs answered with two runs on six hits in five. Rodriguez, J.P. Crawford, Dominic Canzone and Naylor each collected two hits for the visitors and it counted for nothing.
