MLB: Athletics grab Scott Blewett from Cardinals for cash

Cash. That’s all it took. The Athletics picked up right-hander Scott Blewett from the St. Louis Cardinals late Sunday night, and the price was nothing more than a cash consideration for a 30-year-old who has already seen the inside of more clubhouses than most pitchers do in a full career.

Straight off the DFA pile

St. Louis had cut him loose only days earlier, designating him for assignment after a single outing all season. Two innings. One hit, two walks, two strikeouts, and a 5-1 loss at the Los Angeles Angels to show for it. Hardly a showcase. Oakland moved anyway.

An arm that has been everywhere

Kansas City took him in the second round of the 2014 draft, and the tour since has been long. Minnesota, then Baltimore, then Atlanta, then St. Louis. Oakland makes six organizations. The résumé reads like that of a useful spare part rather than a fixture: 4-1 for his career, a 4.10 ERA, 63 strikeouts over 74 and two-thirds innings across 44 games and five seasons.

Why the A’s bothered

The bullpen needed bodies. Experienced ones come cheap when they arrive this way, and Blewett costs Oakland close to nothing while asking for close to nothing in return. A club still stitching together a longer plan can take that flier without a second thought. Whether he sticks is another matter.
