Athletic Bilbao vs Elche : La Liga’s leakiest defence heads to San Mames 
Elche have shipped 12 goals in four league games, more than anyone else in Spain’s top flight. That total leaves the Ilicitanos 19th with just one point.
Athletic Bilbao have conceded six and sit 10th, bang in the middle of the pack. Kick-off is on Saturday, September 12 at 18:30, Spanish and UK time, at San Mames.
The Basques arrive on the back of a result that turned heads: a 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid on September 5. Nico Williams, Robert Navarro and Oihan Sancet were on target, with the first two coming within two minutes after the break.
The contrast with Elche could hardly be sharper. Martin Anselmi’s side have lost three of their four games, including a 2-3 home defeat to Real Sociedad on September 7 despite goals from Thomas Lemar and Fer Nino.
There is one important caveat, though: Elche do score. Five goals in four league matches, 56 shots and 25 on target suggest a side doing more than the table says.
The issue is clear enough, and it’s balance. A team that gets 25 shots on target but concedes 12 goals is not exactly built for away points at a revived Basque club.
One stat does muddy the picture a little: Elche have attempted more shots than Athletic so far this season, 56 to 51. The promoted side are not simply sitting back and taking punishment.
San Mames is expecting 24 degrees for a late afternoon start. Good conditions for a high-tempo game, which won’t do an already shaky defence any favours.

Two wins and two defeats from four league games, six goals scored and five conceded: Edin Terzic’s side are still roughly where you’d expect. The recent trend, though, is clearly upwards.
After a 2-0 win in Vigo against Celta on August 30, with goals from Alex Berenguer and Robert Navarro, the Lions followed it with that 3-0 demolition of Atletico. Two clean sheets in a row, which had not happened since the season began.
At San Mames, Athletic have scored four and conceded three across their home matches. The Basque ground is still a nasty trip, even for teams near the top.
Oihan Sancet has been central to the surge, with 334 minutes played and a goal against Atletico. Robert Navarro has two goals in three appearances and Unai Simon has played every minute of all four matches.
The injury list, though, is still far from pretty. Gorka Guruzeta picked up a hamstring problem on September 8 and will miss the rest of September, while Dani Vivian has been out since July 16 with an adductor issue.
There are two more absentees: Unai Egiluz is sidelined until January 2027 after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament on May 15, and Peio Canales has been unavailable since September 1 with a soleus injury. Terzic will have to make do without four players.
Set-piece numbers are still a bit messy: 25 corners won and 27 conceded across four league rounds. The imbalance is small, but it is there for a side that usually has plenty of the ball.
Iñaki Williams remains a key reference point with 245 minutes under his belt, while Nico Williams has played 184. Terzic is clearly managing the wingers’ workload.

One point from 12, no wins, three defeats: Elche’s start to the season has been rough. Conceding 12 goals in four games means an average of three a match.
The 2-3 loss to Real Sociedad followed a pattern that is becoming all too familiar. Elche were 2-0 down after half an hour before Thomas Lemar on 67 minutes and Fer Nino on 74 minutes dragged them back into it, only for Luka Sucic to settle it in the 90th.
The same script played out in Santander on August 28. Yassir Zabiri smashed in a hat-trick inside 36 minutes, before Elche pulled it back to 3-2 through Buba Sangare and Fer Nino late on.
Fer Nino remains their main attacking threat with two goals in four league games and 316 minutes played. Thomas Lemar, signed in the summer and limited to just 36 minutes so far, marked his first real outing with a goal.
Away from home, Elche have scored three and conceded four, which is a far better look than the overall numbers. That is one of the few positives they can carry into this trip.
Another figure is less flattering: 53 fouls across four league games and eight yellow cards, the highest total of the round. That sort of sloppiness gets punished quickly against teams that can turn dead-ball situations into chances.
One bright spot does stand out, though: Elche have put 25 of their 56 shots on target, a better rate than their hosts. The problem is finishing, not chance creation.
Matias Dituro, 39, has played every minute of all four matches in Elche’s goal. He is leaking goals, but he remains Martin Anselmi’s first choice.

Our prediction: Over 2.5 goals in the match
Elche games are producing drama whether they like it or not: 17 goals across their four league fixtures, which works out at more than four a match. Three of their four games have gone beyond three goals.
Athletic have scored three against Atletico and two in Vigo, with Sancet and Robert Navarro in good form. On the other side, they face a defence that is conceding three goals a game on average and has just let in three against Real Sociedad.
The call is clear: this one goes over 2.5 goals.
One final stat backs that up: the two teams have racked up 95 fouls and 14 yellow cards in four league games. Matches like that are usually broken up and often lead to set-piece chances.
