Football: Anthony Lopes shrugs off hostile crowds at Angers

Booed everywhere, and just fine with it

Anthony Lopes doesn’t flinch. The 35-year-old goalkeeper signed for Angers SCO this summer, closing the book on two seasons at Nantes. Reporters wanted to know how he felt about walking back into the Raymond-Kopa Stadium, the ground where his 2020 visit still lingers in the memory after a rough challenge on Romain Thomas. He didn’t dodge it.

“I’m hated in every stadium in France, and I don’t have any problem with that,” the former Lyon keeper told L’Equipe. Hostile receptions roll right off him.

Koffi’s shadow won’t be easy to escape

The task in front of him is real. Hervé Koffi was excellent for Angers last season, and Lopes now has to make the number one shirt his own. His plan leans on two things: years in the game, and a bond with supporters that he says runs deeper than most players admit. He has sat in the stands himself. He knows how both sides think.

“As soon as the crowd sees the player is not faking it, they can only get behind him,” he said. Every session, every match, full commitment. That is the promise.

The away days are what he’s waiting for

Home comfort isn’t the point. Lopes already has one eye on the trips to come, curious about the welcome waiting for him in enemy territory. Until then, he trains. Nothing about a jeering crowd is new to a man who has spent a career hearing it. At 35, he steps into this chapter with a clear head and one short-term goal: win the Angers faithful over, and fast.
