Ninety minutes, zero saves, one clean sheet
Angus Gunn did not have to touch a shot on target all night. Not one. The Houston Dynamo never made him.
The Scottish rookie collected his first MLS clean sheet in his seventh start as San Jose drew 0-0 in Houston overnight, and he did it without being tested once. Eighteen goals had gone past him in the Earthquakes’ previous six matches. This time the ball simply never arrived.

A stalemate that suited nobody
Jonathan Bond had rather more to do at the other end. The Houston keeper turned away four shots for his ninth shutout of the season and his sixth in seven games.
San Jose finished with a 12-9 edge in attempts, 52.1 percent of the ball, 519 passes to 374 and passing accuracy of 88.3 percent against 82.6. None of it produced a goal.
Ousseni Bouda’s 14th-minute effort was the only shot on target of a plodding first half, and Bond held it. Felipe Andrade headed Houston’s best chance of the half wide in the 34th minute. Reid Roberts and new signing Eduard Lowen tried in the 54th and 56th minutes, both comfortable for Bond, and Nick Fernandez was denied in the 77th.
Two teams stuck in different ways
The point snapped a four-game losing run for San Jose (10-8-4, 34 points), who have still not won since returning from the World Cup break. Four of their five August matches lost. Five defeats and two draws from seven since July 22. Fourth place in the Western Conference is holding for now, but barely.
Houston (12-7-3, 39 points) have taken one point from their last two matches after an eight-match unbeaten run of six wins and two draws was ended at St. Louis on Aug. 22. Second in the West, and stalling.
