Twelve years without October
Twelve seasons. That is how long the Angels have gone without a playoff berth, and Monday night in Boston made it official again. The Red Sox won 5-2, an unremarkable line score that ended Los Angeles’ year.
No other club in the majors is sitting on a drought that long right now.
The rest is in the record: 54-90, and 12 losses in the last 14 games. In 11 of those defeats the Angels failed to push more than three runs across.

The bottom of the order did the damage
Boston (80-65) have won five straight. The blow came from the part of the lineup nobody circles beforehand.
Caleb Durbin, Jarren Duran, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Eli White, hitting six through nine, went seven for 14 with two walks, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Durbin had two hits, one a double, his first extra-base hit since the grand slam in Toronto on August 13.
Duran has fought his swing all season. He got Boston moving anyway with a solo shot in the second. “It felt really good,” he told WEEI radio. “Before the game, my teammates were lifting me up, reminding me I’m a good player and I just need to trust myself.”
Rutschman goes deep off an old teammate
Two outs, two strikes, second inning. Adley Rutschman turned on a Grayson Rodriguez fastball and put it over the wall for three runs. Game effectively over.
The two were teammates in Baltimore not long ago, and Rodriguez did not pretend otherwise. “On that pitch, the fastball is the best pitch to use against him. It was weird seeing him in the box wearing a different uniform.”
It was Rutschman’s fourth homer since arriving from the Orioles on August 3.
Moises Ballesteros had three of the six Angels hits, including a solo shot. Everything else was blank: 15 strikeouts.
Tuesday night brings lefty on lefty. Reid Detmers (4-8, 3.44 ERA) against Patrick Sandoval (1-4, 4.41), who will face the Angels for the first time after five years in their uniform.
