A wild first period sets the tone
Montreal needed all 60 minutes to beat Pittsburgh 5-4 on Saturday night, and the Canadiens have now won five in a row. Erik Karlsson put the Penguins in front on the power play at 2:08 of the first. Oliver Kapanen, scoring for the first time this season, levelled it 33 seconds later, and Josh Anderson made it 2-1 at 3:05. Tommy Novak tied the game again at 7:28.
The second period is where Montreal pulled clear. Alexandre Texier scored at 1:54, Chris Kreider at 2:21, and after Rickard Rakell cut it back to one, Anderson restored the two-goal margin with a deflection off Kris Letang’s skate with 6:54 left in the period.

Crosby makes it uncomfortable
Pittsburgh would not go away. Sidney Crosby scored with 3:11 left in the third to make it 5-4, finishing with a goal and two assists. Earlier in the night he had passed Ray Bourque for the most assists by a player with a single franchise, picking up his 1,112th and then his 1,113rd in the first period. Karlsson also had a goal and two assists, and Rakell and Novak each added a goal and a helper.
Jacob Fowler made 25 saves for Montreal. Sergei Murashov stopped 22 for the Penguins.
The goal that didn’t count
Cole Caufield thought he had scored for Montreal, but Penguins coach Dan Muse challenged for goaltender interference and the goal was taken off the board. Anderson finished with two goals and an assist, Kreider had a goal and an assist, and Lane Hutson picked up two assists. Pittsburgh has lost two straight.
