2,953 minutes, and now a nine-figure raise
Nobody in the NBA played more last season than Amen Thompson. Houston just paid for it. The Rockets and their 23-year-old guard have agreed a five-year, $208 million extension, ESPN reported Thursday morning, with a 10% trade kicker written into the deal.
The timing tells its own story. Thompson was about to enter the last year of the rookie contract he signed in 2023, worth $12.26 million this season according to Spotrac. None of the new money arrives before the summer of 2027. Houston is buying certainty early, at a moment when rookie extension figures around the league have stopped making sense.

Four names, one rebuild, one payroll
Once the paperwork clears, the Rockets have Thompson, Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason under contract past 2027. All four came through the same rebuild. Very few teams in the West can point to a young core that intact.
That is a different bet from the one a lot of front offices are making. Short veteran deals and constant churn on one side, continuity and a rising cap sheet on the other. Houston picked continuity.
What the tape says
Leading the league in total minutes at 23 says two things at once. The staff trusts him, and his body holds up in a way most players his age cannot manage.
The production came with it: 18.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals a game, all career highs. Over 210 games and 144 starts since Houston took him fourth in the 2023 draft, he sits at 14.3 points and 7.6 rebounds.
Then there is the jumper. Still the thing everyone watches. Whether the $208 million reads as a bargain or a bill paid too early in 2029 comes down almost entirely to that one part of his game.
